ToEE: Atari Withholding Patch?

Troika's Lead Programmer Steve Moret has made a post to the Atari forums explaining to the community why the second patch for 'The Temple of Elemental Evil' still hasn't been released. It seems like Atari has been unresponsive for over two weeks now regarding any inquiries from Troika regarding the patch. Thanks to Evil Avatar for the lead.

uh oh...Atari is not really making popular decisions these days...They hold back some very anticipated things, such as the Gothic 2 addon or this patch...

Yup, looks like Atari won't be getting any of my money any time soon, although I'll be happy to fully enjoy any games they publish that make their way onto the Internet.

That's not the way to get the gaming community to your side. I already hear things like "Ban Atari's games" and statements like "I'll never by another game from them" and that kind of things.

No, I'm not the one who is saying that.

So your piracy will actually be an act of valiant revolution then. In no way and under no circumstances is piracy acceptable or good for this fragile market. Go download all the songs you want for free but dont try and portray piracy in this market as somehow noble. Piracy does nothing but contribute to the trend to console crap. Please don't encourage (jokingly or not) others to do so and find a more constructive means of demonstrating your opprobrium.

This Atari situation with the patch is certainly a shame. Many developers have seemingly had considerable trouble getting the necessary attention and respect from their developers (remember how Flagship was created?). What pisses me off is that ToEE is an excellent dungeon crawl but since it is for a niche market of gamers that want some brains in their games (and therefore exhibits less impressive sales figures titles with less satisfying and more shallow gameplay like NWN, KoTOR, Diablo, etc), it didnt get as much attention from its publisher. If Atari is going to shift QA attention away from its niche titles, then people will start to see the pattern and not purchase these titles (either ignoring them or pirating them). This will ultimately lead to the publisher finding these titles to not be profitable enough and, bam, there goes all games worth a damn. Publishers need to start really caring for games like ToEE - allowing them longer development cycles, testing them for longer than a month or two, doing some decent advertising for them so the general gaming populace is aware of their existence, and so on. Maybe then we will see not only less bugs in certain game releases but an increase in the quality and depth of gameplay found in titles across the market.

edit above:

"attention and rescept from their _publishers_" I meant to say.

To summarize what Steve Moret posted on the Atari forums: he finished a beta 2 patch, and started work on a beta 3 patch. whats interesting is that the beta 3 patch is supposed to add a fair bit of new *content* to the game.

Let's hope that a *final* patch (i.e after beta 3) does see the light of day, and before the middle/end of the summer. It would be a great reason to re-install this game and replay it.

Also, for those who installed the first patch and Co8 user-fix, and who noticed that bugbears and wizards weren't using the correct tactics, were too easy, etc. - someone has posted a user-fix to THAT problem on the Co8 and Atari forums.

That is a rather tendentious headline ... you arent doing Troika any favours with it that is for sure.

Maybe there is some sort of a curse over the D&D rights in general. That whatever company is hanging on to it is doomed to do evil and stupid things.

Let's just hope Atari does'nt turn into a second Interplay. I would probably buy a (hopefully patched re-released) budget versjon of ToEE, but it does not look like that will happen.

Is the game playable now? I love that type of rpg but am confused by the patches as to which ones work. I bought the game anyway but have not started it yet.

Moret has done quite a bit of work on it and I'm sure it will have a plethora of fixes and maybe some added tidbits. I was able to play through the game with no game breaking bugs and only a few minor annoyances already - so you can take your chances with the current patch + maybe the Co8 fan patch if you want. However, I am waiting for this patch before I take my next playthrough (this game is a great DnD combat sim and has heaps of replayability for that alone) and I suggest you wait for your first as Im sure this next patch will be out soon enough.

I just hope issues with this title (with respect to the publishers lack of proper QA testing) and whining both from people who cant appreciate a good dungeon crawl (perhaps wanting titles with more story or character interaction elements - you would think they figured ToEE wouldnt fit that bill by how it was advertised: as a "classic adventure" - duh) and /or deep tactical gameplay with an unapologetically deep ruleset implementation (most people's would have been resolved with some good ole fashioned manual reading - been a while since the manual meant a damn) wont stop Troika from pursuing other titles like these.
