The complication and work needed to sustain an online RPG means that its almost impossible to find one thats good AND free. If its free then someone needs to spend a lot of their one free time working on it, and more often than not, the team constantly loses members to real world jobs and it just all falls apart.

Its a very nice idea in practice. But free MMORPG's just dont work very well.

check out www.tibia.com , its not by any means a great game but it is free and thats what counts to some people . Just beware that about 98% percent of the players are thieves... they will steal kills and steal your loot as if you werent even there.

I did not say this would apply to a regular game. I said it would apply to MMORPGs. I did not say the more expensive it is, the better it is. I said the most expensive ones would be the best bet if your looking for a good MMORPG. In other words, the best MMORPG games are somewhere between the average cost, and the most expensive cost (100%+ of average monthly fee). This is all just a matter of opinion, but if you consider the most popular MMORPG games the most successful ones, then I don't think my argument is debatable...

For those looking for a free MMO, Shattered Galaxies has opened up free accounts. You still gain an advantage by signing up and paying for the game, but you can play forever for free.

I'm not endorsing it, nor have I played it. If you try it, let us know how it is.

Still sounds to me like you're saying the same thing, but maybe I'm reading you wrong. I still refuse to say that paying more for an MMORPG gives you a better chance of falling on a better game... Price on an MMORPG should strictly be dictaded by offer and demanded, IMO.

Cost vs. Quality

I work for New Age Software, a company that produces computer software for the new age (as the name says). We have developed a MMORPG for only $.25 a day, which comes out to about $7 a month. I agree that players should not have to pay very large amounts to play a game. The usual reason for this is the site uses ad companies that sponser them. Those annoying pop-ups and stuff are part of the reason prices have been driven up.

We broke away from ads and such because games should be completely player focused, not so bent on making money they charge ridiculous amounts and flood you with spam. Also, whenever you register on a site to play a game, even free, they are paid for your e-mail address so you get even more spam that way. This game is specifically built to house a HUGE amount of players in an ad/spam free zone. Also, there are no big downloads. It runs on HTML so play time is faster and more accessable.

Basically what I am saying is that you are right, games should not cost so much that you have to worry about how to pay for them. That is the concept we try to work with at New Age that we used for Galactic Outlaw. We also have a completely free Temporary Assignment (visitor's area) so that no one gets ripped off. Check it out if you want.
