Have you found a fix for this? I'm getting the same thing. Should I just return the game?

Gothic should run on Voodoo3 cards. Are you sure DirectX8 is installed?

Try the Radeon patch on the notebook with the rage mobility. I read a positive report about that.

Hi, this may help. I had a problem with the installation too, it just crashed every time I tried. This happened on both the English and the German version of the Game (so you see, I really like it ), which is kind of funny, because I remember playing the German version on an earlier PC without any troubles.

I disabled the DMA-Mode for the duration of installation for my DVD-drive and after that the problem didn't happen again.

YEP! that is correct. DMA should e used only for dvd players if you are going to use it to view movies...terrible transfers or bad for cd burners.
