Do I have a dodgy CD???

Damn game... Both my home PC (which I admit isn't exactly the latest technology but it's coped with splinter cell and Unreal2 so it can't be that bad) and my work PC (a nearly new P2.26) will not cope with the installation file "Gothic2-setup.exe". The file seems to totally lock up whatever you try to view it with, ie. File Explorer. Using an NT machine I did manage to get the said file burnt onto a different CD. This then somehow allowed me to install it onto my work PC (which unfortunatly doesn't have a graphics card good enough to cope with it). This seemingly cunning plan failed however on my PC at home.

This is a REALLY strange problem and the only thing I can think is that either the file is too big to handle or the file is corrupt.

PS: I even tried zipping the file but it crashed winzip

If you canīt even copy the file it sounds like a defective CD to me.

Solved...

Works fine after uninstalling virus software! How dumb is that???!! And I mean full uninstall, not just turning it off.
I know there's lots of configurations of computer to cope with but you would think they could come up with an installation routine that takes virus checkers into account, am I supposed to trust the publisher/designers etc not to infrct my PC?
To help anyone else out with this, the virus software was Sophos, both at home and work...

But where do you want to draw the line, how many of the 100.000 or more programs should be tested? There is always a program somebody else finds important. In your case itīs a widely unknown virus scanner.

Well hush my mouth...

It's not the software per se it's the principal. A home computer, connected to the internet, without antivirus software is seriously asking for trouble. I spent 30 quid on a game that says on the box that it will run on my PC. It DOESN'T say that it may not run because I have antivirus software, however common (though Sophos is one of the largest antivirus companies, if not admittedly the best).

I've also noticed in these posts that it's likely that antivirus software is screwing up peoples save games. So I can't even protect my PC now until I'm bored with the game and don't wish to play it anymore.

This is about principle not specifics. It's almost like saying 'Yes you can play Gothic 2 but you'll have to take out your modem first because there's thousands of different ones and we can't be a***d to test for them all'

Rant over...
