INtrigued, I nabbed System Shock 2.
Well... damn.
Yep, that game definitely makes you jumpy. I keep getting massacred, as well. Definitely not enough ammo laying around at the point I'm at (first mission). Have to club things to death... not cool. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

@Xen, Have you tried adding the new hi-res character art mod for SS2? |

No, but it sounds cool.
SS2 wins... some award... it's the only game that has ever had me quit in disgust while having a good time. Heh. I could crank it down to easy, I suppose, but I'm not THAT bad at RPG/FPS hybrids (I didn't think... I did just fine in Deus Ex and NOLF2...). Stupid exploding protocol droids... _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Hear, hear, iron man! The Zelda games are by far the greatest RPGs ever to reach a console (well, RPG/adventure if you wish to be picky).
However, if you're strictly thinking computer RPGs, Anachronox is a very accessible RPG. Fantastic characters and story, like a great book. Impressive graphics too, espeically for its time. You'll have the controls down in five minutes, but will find yourself playing for a LOT longer because of its ingeniouness.
Consider Grandia II also. A console RPG port, but also very accessible, and almost on par with Anachronox in terms of strong, sympathetic characters and "page-turning" story. Easy to get into, hard to get out of! |

If You really want to feel what RPG is all about You should definatelly play FALLOUT 1 and 2. Post nuclear world. real freedom of actions. Never was something better created. And try out DEUS-EX - no matter some people may say it`s not RPG. Someone mentioned consoles - one title FINAL FANTASY 7. From last creations - GOTHIC 1 and 2.
Of course all the others mentioned games (played most of them) are great too. |

I disagree about Gothic. Gothic was my very first computer game and one of the few I've played all the way through. It does have a learning curve but it doesn't feel burdensome like picking up some other games can. You can't do anything wrong in the early part of Gothic... everyone will talk to you and it soon starts to come together. Yes, you will feel directionless at first but NPCs are quick to send you on simple, tiny quests that allow you to get a lovely feel for the game. I just wanted to point out that there is at least one newbie who started with Gothic and loved every moment of it.
SS2 is completely a creepfest! It made me scared to play it at night. The creepiest game I've ever played is Undying--I played it until morning once because I was afraid to go to bed!
Morrowind is definitely too hardcore and so is Neverwinter Nights. NWN is incredibly complicated. I've been playing it off and on since it came out and I still don't really understand it. I don't understand about alignments or how to choose the right feats to compliment each other and I still have a very hard time figuring out where to put skill points. If you don't apply skill points properly in NWN it's just a waste and does nothing to improve your character. I'm not criticizing NWN... I like it very much! I'm just pointing out that the game can be very confusing to a beginner.
If you have a console, then Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is easy and fun. It has all the feel of a big rpg without the overwhelming aspect. Plus--BG:DA uses 3rd Edition D&D rules, like NwN, so it's a terrific primer for more serious hardcore RPGs. |

Make that at least two newbies Gig!! I wouldn't say that NWN is too complicated, what I know about d&d can be written on the back of a stamp but I still had a great time playing it, never realy liked the multiplayer though (mabye I'm just a gaming loner ). And skill points? I just used the reccomended button and tried to have a wide range of immunities and the like, the problem was, when I was playing a mage I would concentrate on destructive spells and I had virtually no protection spells and my first few chars were crap (wasting feats on things like heavy armour profiencies and the like on a sorcerer, I ignored things like spell failures ) Anyway enough of my moaning about NWN. I got Morrowind off ebay and I didn't like it at all (just as well I only payed a tenner for it ) Maby I'll come bak to it when I have a bit more experience under my belt. Sorry if I moaned a bit but I'm prone to doing so. _________________
