The last poll looked at your outlook on Bethsoft's Fallout 3 development, especially in light of Oblivion. It's hard to interpret the movement of the results (although the pattern might be different because I let it run too long). So, 32% are optimistic followed by 18% who think it will suck, 17% think it will rock, 16% unsure and 15% pessimistic. Breaking that down into broad groups, 50% are positive and around 34% negative (rest unsure).

<br>It would be nice to correlate the results against those who are fans of Fallout vs fans of Oblivion (and/or both) but that's too hard with these simple polls.

<br>Interestingly, the optimistic result fell at least 20 points over the course of the poll. Either way, it's clear Bethsoft has a solid base of fans but a fairly large minority are not convinced.

Interesting results. I, myself, am optomistic, but I'm taking a "wait-and-see" approach. Fallout will have to be a substantially different game from Oblivion. I'm really eager to see what they have in mind. I hope that they'll have something for E3 2007, or maybe even this year. One thing that Oblivion made me optomistic about is that a 1st person Fallout can be good. If the game has a lot of FPS combat then it will need really good AI, cool weapons, etc. And Oblivion definitely has that. |

Oblivion definitely makes me pessimistic about Fallout 3. I fear it will devolve into an FPS with token nods towards Fallout (basically what doctor_kaz wants). If they want to create yet another FPS (a.k.a. ACTION rpg), now set in an postapocalyptic setting, be my guest (just don't expect my money), but don't destroy the Fallout name, invent a new one.
Another concern is that the Elder Scrolls series isn't exactly well known for meticulous play balancing.
In order for a game to be suitable to use the Fallout name it should retain a number of characteristics of the series:
- Humour, the Fallout kind. Hard to do, but essential.
- The SPECIAL system, or something quite close to it.
- Party based (and the half baked offerings of NWN and KOTOR don't cut it).
- Turn based, or the ability to be used in a turn based manner. BG and Fallout Tactics provide examples, and it is quite possible this can be improved.
- The Fallout world. There are various ways to to expand or provide variation. The number of types of bizarre creatures was limited in the originals. Adding a number of new ones that fit in would be welcome. It would also be possible to locate the action in a different locale (a Russian vault dweller? Hm, an Aussie one could yield some interesting marsupials...), or make it a true sequel by placing it in the same general area but later in time, allowing references to the originals. |

Actually, I prefer the same, but I have sort of accepted that it will never happen. Unfortunately, there's no way that they'll make this game a PC exclusive and, thus, it's going to be an FPS/RPG. I think that it could still be good though. |

Indeed, however even though I really like strawberry flavored icecream I would be rather disappointed if the box had said "Tripple Chocolate Chip Icecream Delight - with chocolate chips, nuts, more chocolate chips and chocolate sauce heated and stirred into smooth and creamy goodness by 16 naked virgins and oh, did we mention the chocolate chips?"
In other words: If you can't make a worthy sequel to Fallout then don't try to capitalize on the brand ... especially if you can make a great game without it (there is great potential in the Oblivion engine just not as a Fallout game). _________________ Signature? ... erm ... nope, can't think of one. |
