Do you really need to test drive this?

Well said, Bigpapa. I, too, am an avid gamer, and am looking forward to seeing if this game holds up to the hype. I would really expect a demo from the team of devs, to show that they have "Got their stuff together" this time around.

I don't think I've played any of their previous releases (not even daggerfall...don't lynch me) but I've heard a lot of horror stories. I think as a sign of goodwill and to promote the game, they should have released (or should release) a demo with a portion of the world included.

Perhaps just a single town, where the border of the town is the border of the demo...i.e. you can't go past the last house or something like that. Hell, a swordfight or two and maybe some NPC interaction would constitute a demo to me. Just show me what I can expect in the full version; can't see that it would pose a great degree of difficulty to those talented programmers.

Good news, I think..

According to the morrowind website FAQ,
http://www.morrowind.com/main.htm
(and link over to faq)

They DO plan on releasing a demo in the future, but won't say exactly when...

Just thought I'd let y'all know..

Well, I know it made me pretty happy to see they were coming out with a playable demo... I felt obligated to let the forum members know. Hopefully, it will live up to expectations, and thrifty folk (like us ) will open up their pocketbooks and buy the game...

I doubt there will be a demo, and I think it was WormGod who explained that building a demo would mean building a totally seperated area with partial content from the game. While it could be done, it seems a waste of time to me, and I think that's exactly how they feel at Bethesda. Remember: the more "open" a game is, the less possible is it to do a demo with limited content.

So better not bet on a demo (more on this soon at MorrowindDot *g*).

Rend, you doubt there will be a demo, when it plainly says on their site they ARE planning a playable demo???

Here's hoping you're wrong!

This is what I am referring zo:

WormGod on the problems around creating a demo:
I think much of this is due mainly because of content, which in turn, equals size. Take Morroiwnd for example (I know you were waiting for this one). To create a demo, the game would have to be cut down DRAMATICALLY. Well, the game features the entire island, and in a demo, that is a no no. A small PIECE of the island would have to be REMADE and REPOPULATED. Basically, we would have to handcraft a complete new game. Just no time or staff available for that. I would LOVE to create a demo, and it MAY still be done, I just have no idea how and when. I think a lot of other game develpers have this very same problem. The more content that goes into games, the more difficult demos become.

True. Larian Studios had a similar problem with making a demo of Divine Divinity. They eventually managed to create one and it should be released some time in April probably. It's going to be approximately 350-400MB large.
In Morrowind's case, the game will definitely be out a long time before they will finish a (hypothetical) demo. This pretty much renders the demo useless. We'll get to know soon enough from reviews and fan hands-on experiences whether it's worth buying or not. From the beta previews that have been released so far, I have no doubt that Morrowind is one of those must have games

Even i'm suspicious, it is still in my top "must have games" I can understand that it's difficult to make a demo, but it's not impossible like they said. Well, we will see it soon from reviewers, if it's really that good, that we hope it is. It's not my fault that i'm skeptic about it (they have earned that reputation by messing earlier games), but maybe this game finally changes my mind

I'm in agreement, Bigpapa. Much as I'd love to go out and drop the money on this on release day (or, more realistically, pre order it now..) I'm going to have to wait and see what you guys all think of it...read tons of reviews, highs-lows of the game, etc. I really don't have a doubt that it WILL be a great game but...as a student, the money is too precious right now to spend on an untested game...

Well, since it's apperantly possible to send out beta-builds to the press for review purposes...so why can't a possible demo be like that?

Just slice out a portion of the game, let's say one or two cities and some surrounding terrain and call that a demo.
Perhaps include the character creation process as well? Or just the 3 archetypes (fighter, mage, thief) and let them run around in a town and some outdoor terrain, do some minor newbie quests.
Since it's a demo it would be perfectly allright if you can't finish all quests or see and do everything.

Kinda like the Gothic demo.

Then again, I am NOT a game developer so while it might sound simple to me it could well be too difficult with Morrowind
