Oklahoma Senator wants Chicken Boxing! |
|
*Yes, this is real.*
Lawmaker wants tiny boxing gloves on roosters
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) -- An Oklahoma senator hopes to revive cockfighting in the state by putting tiny boxing gloves on the roosters instead of razors.
The Oklahoma legislature outlawed the blood sport in 2002 because of its cruelty to the roosters, which are slashed and pecked to death while human spectators bet on the outcome.
But State Sen. Frank Shurden, a Democrat from Henryetta and a long-time defender of cockfighting, said the ban had wiped out a $100-million business.
To try to revive it, he has proposed that roosters wear little boxing gloves attached to their spurs, as well as lightweight, chicken-sized vests configured with electronic sensors to record hits and help keep score.
"It's like the fencing that you see on the Olympics, you know, where they have little balls on the ends of the swords and the fencers wear vests," said Shurden. "That's the same application that would be applied to the roosters."
Janet Halliburton, president of the Oklahoma Coalition Against Cockfighting, which led the drive for the 2002 law, said Shurden is really seeking to loosen the ban.
"What this is going to do is make a platform for him to continually try to amend the existing ban," Halliburton told The Oklahoman newspaper.
The State Senate will consider Shurden's proposal next month. |

Wouldn't want him to spend time on a budget or anything like that. _________________ =Member of the Nonflamers Guild=

I think they should repeal the fox-hunting ban in this country, but only if people promise to extract all their hounds' teeth before the hunt. It's better that way. _________________ Charlie Dobbie

I can't believe that there is actually a Coalition against Cockfighting. Not that I agree with cockfighting, but couldn't they spend their time and energy on something more beneficial to humanity? _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Hear you nothing that I say? - Master Yoda

It's comforting to know that our elected officials are concentrating on such important issues as this, if such a story is indeed genuine.
I however am very skeptical for a number of reasons. The least of which being a supposed Democrat senator wholeheartedly behind what could be considered blatant animal cruelty for no reason other than human sport, and the fact he seems so concerned that a "$100,000,000.oo business" was wiped out makes me further skeptical.
Yes, the little creatures would be theoretically safe in their little vests of rooster armor and gloves, but just the act of making the things fight is quite cruel in itself. Then, the comparison between the fine art of fencing and a barnyard chicken-brawl is almost an offense in itself. If this is indeed the case, I'm all for a constitutional amendment requiring drug testing of all govt employees.
Then for the final mind-blower, the knightess in shining armor to the rescue of the roosters enters the fray with the proverbial three sixes on her scalp. It's none other than Janet Halliburton to the rescue, an obviously evil woman by virtue of her lineage alone. I am bewildered by the fact she seems to at once have concern for the poor fowl's lives and dignity, and also no concern whatsoever for the potential untold millions the riled-up roosters would supposedly provide.
Im sorry, but I cannot believe this story is real. _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

A couple things to keep in mind, most importantly, this is Oklahoma we are talking about. Sorry Okies, but you guys do do some silly things. And a State Senator, not a National one.
The story is from Reuters, and printed in The Dallas Morning News. A publication I think quite highly of.
