Game in DVD vs. in CD

News from Voodoo Extreme:

quote:
Far Cry on DVD-only in Europe

When I released word of a DVD release for Unreal Tournament 2004 in the EU, a reader got in touch stating that Far Cry was only going to be released on DVD in the same territory. While we couldn't discover if this was correct, Ubisoft yesterday revealed that it was to several news outlets.

Far Cry will be Ubisoft's first major DVD-only release and somewhat forces people into buying a DVD-ROM for the game, or turning those who refuse to, towards piracy. Significant sales could pave the way for other developers, and poor sales could scrap the notion of DVD-only releases for years to come. Whatever, Ubisoft is taking a much needed risk, and for that they are to be applauded.

As it stands, the game will only be released on CD-ROM in North America, with a DVD version being a possibility, although that is pure speculation.

It is understandable if some peoples refuse to upgrade until next major upgrade for their PC or as long as their CD-Rom is still working fine. The big advantages of using DVD-Rom for game: one DVD instead of multiple CDs for single game and its storage capacity.

I am using my second DVD-Rom now (first one broken after 2 years and half). No doubt it is the future of storage on computer, slowly and surely replace Floppy drive and CD-Rom. You can read CDs with DVD drive anyway, and can boot up PC from DVD-Rom instead of Floppy drive or CD-Rom. Most hardwares driver is on CD-Rom now, and you can use CDRW-drive for storing huge amount of data. I suppose my next upgrapde will be DVDR/RW-drive, since as for now the standard haven't set yet.

I may buy a copy just for the sole purpose of boosting DVD sales. I'm sooo tired of multiple CDs.

Pah. For a game of which the demo requires at minimum a 1GHz CPU and recommends 2GHz, I think people can stretch to a DVD-ROM. I find it hard to believe that there are many machines of that calibre without DVD capability - they've been standard issue on all computers for a good few years.

Anyhow, even if there's someone who has a capable machine but still doesn't have a DVD-ROM, they can pick up the hardware for less than half the cost of the game. Where's the beef?

cfmdobbie - I ablolutely agree. A game with such requirements will most probably be no problem to run at all mashines that meet them, as all new PC from a good many years now come with a DVD player. Hell, even DVD-writers are becoming something standard.

There are reports that something similar will happen to UT2004: there will be a 6-CD (!) regular edition and a 2-DVD special edition. The extra space on the DVD edition will allow extra content to be included.

Time to move on to the next form of media. I'll vote for DVD.

My experience is technology becomes mainstream when it hits certain key price points or approaches the price of the old technology it replaces. DVDROMs are less than CDROMs used to cost not that long ago: time to move to DVD distribution for games. In fact, DVD-R/RW is only a few months from mainsteaming and is already *very* popular.

I bought a new DVD-ROM yesterday, an ASUS, but the CD-Key that came with it for installing the drivers isn't accepted by the install program!

@Aphazel

There's a lot of reasonably priced products that will replace your cd rom and cdr/w and add dvd rom in one package. I have one that does all three, and have absolutely no problems doing any one of those things.

That's when you take it back to the store you bought it from and throw it at them.

DVD is the way to go. I'm sick and tired of multiple CDs per game.
