The Never Ending Search
   

Greetings All. I'm hoping you can share your MMOG experience and wisdom for a fellow MMOG gamer.

I've played nearly all the MMOG's that have come out and always look ahead to the next one in hopes of finding what I am looking for: A MMOG whose gaming environment is suited to a roleplayer, both in player population and the game engine.

Though I played nearly of all them, often it was more of a sampling, grabbing it when it first came out in its bug ridden and content lacking form. But MMMOGs grow over time and usually for the better. Yet I quit after a couple of months and keep looking forward. Now I'm wondering if there's something I'm leaving behind.

I know there may be no answer for this. But if any of you can share your opinions and experience on the matter, I'd be very grateful.

I dont really have an answer. But i am kinda like that. Im waiting for two games specifically that cater more to roleplayers and strong players like me:

-- Darkfall Online
-- Trials of Ascension

Now there will be more roleplayers because the game design allows more for it. You can be a real pirate, a real thief, an outlaw, a guardian of a land, an owner of lands/towns/, an emporer, a henchman, a hireling, a mercenary, anything you want. And i firmly believe that the most conductive thing to roleplaying is PvP, believe it or not. When you think about it, its true. It causes more people to get together under a common bond, as well as allows other people to become short-term or long-time enemies. Ive been playing Darktide in Asherons Call, and i must say, i havent had this much fun for a long time.

I havent heard of those games. I'm going to have to look into them.


I can see how PVP is conductive to RPing by groups formed in mutal defense or interests. But how many PVP'ers out there actually RP their ways. No matter how many MMOG's i've been to there is always the KoOl DewDS who are looking to Pwn your a$$. That I cant stomach especially if the MMOG is a setting where it doesnt belong. Is it like that on Darktide?

One of the biggest problems with a lot of so-called roleplaying games today is just that: they don't really do much to support or encourage roleplay. The word itself is now used to mean a style of game, not games that actually require players to roleplay.

I have played several of the bigger name games, and one or two I happened to stumble across, but it's always ended the same: I get bored with the dry, boring atmosphere. Kill things, get loot, and so on. Some games have roleplayer guilds, but if you want to interact with anyone else, you're out of luck.

There is however, a tiny population out there of gamers just like you and me, who wish nothing more than to roleplay, and relish in the thought of it being not only acceptable, but actually encouraged and rewarded.

There is a game in the works that highlights this. Reclamation is going to be one of those games we all look forward to. Not only does it value roleplayers and seek them out, but it's entirely original. The structure, the 'classes', even the terminology. It's all unique. In the mean time, Lyra's previous work, Underlight can provide another outlet for roleplaying. Top of the line graphics this one may not have, but that only leaves its loyal fans more room to roleplay with.

Well Darkfall is more mutual defense because there is actually land ownership. In games like Darktide (AC1 server) its straight PvP, which has a lot of "owning dudes." But thats to be expected. I think you will find a few of those people on Darkfall Online but not as many because player accountability will be in effect most of the time. That doesnt mean you wont get killed, it just means that more people and NPCs will actually be protecting you from them. You would have to read the FAQ to really get a gist of what it will be like.

I'd have to agree with Ammon, that AC Darktide (DT) really had something newer games lack. I've been seeking a fantasy based MMORPG with a focus on both RP and PvP and have yet to find this apparent "Holy Grail".

DT had very little ruleset for PvP. MS/Turbine basically took the AC game which was full of quests and monthly storyline and allowed characters to attack and kill each other. Later on, safe zones in the form of player housing, were created. Beyond that I don't think DT had any rules.

What made DT so immersive was that the players had to police themselves and from that two castes emerged: those who wanted chaos (random PKing) and those who wanted order (Anti-random PKing). Was very interesting to see this develop.

Every title I've played since then, with the exception of EVE Online, has created such rules in PvP to protect the non-PvPer that there is no player policing and as such little immersion.

I'm still seeking a fantasy based MMORPG with a PvP ruleset that allows for the players to police themselves and create order or lack thereof. I wish EVE Online developers CCP would port the fantastic systems to a Fantasy genre. The faction system, character and organization accountability system, agent based questing system and nearly daily storyline communique's blow me away.

Ake, take a look at DarkFALL. Its got wide open PvP with player policing. Should be really fun game, actually. Its releasing at the end of 2004.

Darke, have you played Ultima Online? If so did you enjoy it? I know there is some legality issues around about the free UO servers, but some of them are really fun and well done. Might be something worth looking into. I also must suggest DarkFall as a future prospect for you to look at.

As Saffron has mentioned, there are quite a few gamers like you. We want the true immersive feeling of a game, and not to have to worry about someone going out of character, thus ruining that. Underlight provides this atmosphere, and with it's team of GM's, there are always interesting stories unfolding.

If you're truly looking for an enforced roleplaying game, then you need not look any further.
