impossible advancement in thieves guild

Seccond quest, I believe. I have to get the key from Savor Trandel in Balmora. My sneak skill rocks but I can't succeed. I open his inventory through sneak and when I grab the key, they all want to fight. I ran away a few times but as it turns out, I didn't get the key. Can't fight him because of all his friends. And I can't successfully pickpocket even with 100 sneak. WHAT GIVES!?!?!?!

Security determines your ability to pick-pocket.

Well... I am a mage (mage-thief) but wantd to advance in thieves guild and this is how I got the quest:

I fought him bare-handed until my hand-to-hand leveled up so much that I could knock him down (minutes of play+) and I funally knocked him, took the key from him (although I could unlock with a spell), opened the chest and then the seller started attacking and I ran out.

My bounty was maybe 100, so I paid "price on my head" in Balmora and gave the Habassi the stuff

Well, I had the same problem with that chick in the South Wall, where I needed to steal the code book and return it to the fighter's guild.

Because the items you can steal are random, and your success is based on your sneak and security skills (I think), you should be able to do it eventually. With her, I just stood over by the wall and saved the game. Then I tried to pickpocket her. If I got caught, I'd restart. Eventually, I lucked out and got the code book without getting caught. It took probably thirty tries though. My sneak and security skills are around 30 I think.

Don't go to that guy, go to the other one. Go to his house and enter the upstairs door and sneak down the stairs and wait for him to turn his back. Save the game. Then sneak to him and pickpocket him.

If you get the key but fail, just hand to hand him till he falls down and break for the door. No one reports the crime and you get credit because hes alive and you give the key to sugar lips.

If you don't get the key, reload and try again. I had to do it three or four times, but I got it and moved on.

If you kill him, and give sugar lips the key, you get no credit because sugar is gonna have a hard time using or delivering the key. But you can move on with the next quest.

Good Luck.

He is easy

My sneak skill is up to 100. Walking in the door where he is waiting for you emediatly hold down your sneak button. Wait for him to turn around and walk away.... Then pick his pockets as he is almost to the end of the hall. I succeeded the first time. The second time he was too close and I got caught.

Hmmm I didn't think it was THAT hard.. why get into any fights? I just sweet-talked him and gave him a lil bribe as the finishing touch (he doesn't like his master much). After that I went to the house and looted it for everything... and THEN gave the key to sugar-lips... what? Am I supposed to be a thief or not?? She didn't say I couldn't rob him myself
