I've just started my very first game of DD.
I've taken a warrior type character.

What would you say were essential skills to pick up along the way.

I'm thinking repair item and lockpick, what do you guys suggest?

Do not take more than one level of repair!

Other than that:
Lock picking - Yes!
Weapons Specialization - A must!
Enchant weapon - A must
True sight is a must for the end game

Other than that, have fun. Pick the skills that fit your character.

I put a lot into restoration, and found that very useful ... it allowed me to horde my healing potions for nasty battles (potions can be consumed on the fly with less interuption of the battle flow than casting a healing spell).

You really need a few spells too. The freeze one is essential for ALL orcs. Some of the others are very helpful, some are not. Choose carefully and plan ahead. I loved the warriors whirlwind move in the early game.

There are so many things to try out.

Their are a few that are worthless.

There is one I recomend you not use at all as it is bugged and broken, its the trap laying skill.

You probably want some healing. Then theres all the damage and hitting augmenters if you want to go hand to hand.

Only use swords all of the other weapons are bad exept bows.

And if you want the ability to explore all the easter eggs in the game you need level 5 lockpicking.

Thanks guys, Really useful info there. I was wondering how many weapons to specialise in and wouldn't have known just to take 1 level in repair.

Do you recommend a summoning spell?. I just hit level 4 after killing Jake twice and think the level 3 summon udead looks like it could be useful?.

I have 2 skill points saved up (spent 1 on repair and got healing for solving a quest) , decision, decisions!.

Would you recommend identify item?. Also, bow or crossbow?.

I would focus on just one weapon ... I selected sword and regreted it early on, and so wasted a couple of points on axe. Later the swords get really, really good, have lower requirments and are much faster.

Just my personal opinion *grin*

Oh yeah ... as to bows ... I found them useful, but unless you want to specialize in them (increase your scouting range etc) I found them hard to use.

I agree with specialising in sword too. I didn't use bows, because I had flame strike and later a couple of other ranged spells, so a bow was unecessary. Warrior mages are very powerful

Well its up to you.

If you want to summon stuff go for it.

My character I beat the game with was mostly a summoner and an archer.

I was a wizard.

I found the best summon spell was wall of steel. But I maxed out summon skeleton also, between them both thats 10 skeletons. It gave the monsters something to fight while i was archering them.

But thats not the best character at all actually. You can do it however you want. Eventually you want to make potions. And other miscellany.

If you want to hand to hand start adding those things like spiritual damage and etc.

You need level 5 lockpick but I think you get at least one for free. You need identify and all those things. Youll get a lot of points as the game goes on.

Animate dead and ray of command is pretty cool but it is bugged and can cause crashing. You can animate dead bosses and have them follow you around.
