Yeah I agree that it's somewhere in between IWD and BG2. There isn't as many side quests as BG and not as much toing and froing (sp?) (epsecially if you have a paladin in your party (makes the Fell Wood Children quest, that you had problems with, very easy ))
I did enjoy BG2 though as I'm the kind of game that like to find everything in a game and BG2 was the king of hidden extras (think of the houses in the docks and bridge area that have nothing to do with the main quest).
