G2 expansion: is it a true "add-on mod?!

Hi all again: another question:

is that new expansion a true add-on, where i play it *with* gothic2, like a morrowind mod/bg2 add-on?

or

is this mod an "outside" add on, like the mods in neverwinter nights, where you play the mod outside of the regular game?!

thanks...freestone

Its not exactly either.

Its more a mod than an addon, because you DO play it within the original game. However, it changes a lot about the original setup, so its more like an upgrade than a mod.

This is a mistake. The add-on changes a lot of things and rebalances the whole game. Now it´s very hard.
You should play the game as a mage and then with the add-on as a melee char.

I'd highly suggest not starting to play Gothic II with the add-on if you haven't beaten Gothic II on its own. First of all, the add-on is more than a simple mod. It adds a whole new regions AND changes some aspects you know from Gothic II. If you haven't played the original game before going for the expansion you cannot really appreciate the changes it features.

Does Addon only adds things to the game, gives more solutions to some problems etc. or maybe it erases some things originally present in G2? I mean especially quests. Thanx in advance for answers.

Haven't thought about this question before, but as far as I've played it (beaten the add-on and currently hunting down you-know-what-creatures in the former prisom colony again) there didn't seem to be any quest missing.

Well, the only thing you could label as "missing" is

SPOILER!

A certain dialog with Dexter (leader of the bandit camp near Onar's farm). It's been altered since the wohle bandit story plays a much more important role than in Gothic II.
