Op Ed @ Sun2Surf: Video Games: Fun or Deadly?

Linked from <a href="http://www.bluesnews.com" target="_blank">Blue's News</a>: A provocative article from a Malaysian site that springboards from a recent Reader's Digest article. <blockquote><em>On June 7, 2003, he was taken to a police station by patrolman Arnold Strickland for receiving stolen property. After he was booked, he snatched Strickland's Glock pistol and shot three officers, including Strickland, dead.
<br>
<br>Life imitating video art? Most parents would like to think so.
<br>
<br>However, clinical psychologist Dr Alvin Ng (pix) said international studies have shown that the negative effects of violent video games are highly debatable.
<br>
<br>"While there is evidence showing that violent games can breed violence in children, it is insufficiently significant to say that these video games actually cause violence. Studies on media violence have shown it has no significant effect on juvenile crime either," he said.</em></blockquote> You can read the entire article and its findings at <a href="http://www.sun2surf.com/article.cfm?id=11883" target="_blank">Sun2Surf</a>.

Not again.

Millions of earth people play video games. Millions of earth people eat ice cream.

Neither ice cream nor video games cause people to murder. These correlations are all rudimentary fallacies.

Agreed...it's just amazing how many times it comes up and in such odd places as Malaysia!

Come to think of it, it was one of the first things mentioned in the newscast about that schoolshooting in Indiana last week. The kid played violent games and was a Marilyn Manson fan, somehow the easy access to a gun was overlooked.

Yes, Hein. They also overlooked things like he wears sneakers and prefers pancakes over waffles. Maple syrup doesn't kill people, guns kill people...

It is all arbitrary. If this Indiana kid would have did what he did 15 years ago, Guns and Roses and The Information Superhighway would have been blamed instead.
