The better game and RPG was Gothic 2. But Gothic had the best and most immersive environment ever created in a game: The Old Camp.

Amen to the old camp, the atmosphere there is really something to behold. I hope that there will be a rendition of that in G3

Gothic 1 had a very complete feeling world. Not just the old camp, all three camps where very well thought out and done.

Gothic 2 lost some of the atmosphere, but not much. And what it lost it gained in diversification.

Both are great games, and both beg to be replayed after completion. If I had to choose I would go with Gothic 2 because it did a great job of living up to the standard set by the original and making it bigger.

"Gothic" was the First of it's kind, it broke the mould, it set a new horizon, it
was the pioneer, the leader, everthing else is a mere follow-on, you could not
await Gothic 3 if not for Gothic, but alas, why oh why did the gamewriters go
and overdo it in G2 by oversizing the game loading instruction-set, it is too
big, this is easily demonstrated by the noticeable spead-up on both loading
and more response when getting to the island near to the ending.
Then for economical reasons (or was it laziness) we had to "make do" with
some of the original landscape! I paid good money for a repeated landscape!
can I have some of my money back! - - so you see, Gothic was my first love.

I loved going back to the Valley of Mines! That was one of the best parts of Gothic 2! I think Gothic 2 was the best gaming purchase I ever made (I didn't buy Gothic, my friend lent it to me and it runs without a CD. I'm a cheapskate; I know )

I guess Gothic gets the nod for having a better end game dungeon. The temple of the sleeper was pretty huge. Gothic 2 had better environments, more dense forests and much more landmass. Gothic 2 also had a slightly more streamlined skill set as well.

I like Gothic II better because in Gothic you couldn't get a job as an apprentice. Sure you could make things for the smith but there wasn't an actuall option for you to say "i' d like to sell the weapons i've made" or whatever he said. And you can't join a militia in Gothic 1, and you can fight new creatures as well.

Gothic 1 was the best game some becouce of the previus mentioned atmospheare also in G1 you had no clear goal so therfore the storyline was better in G2 You knew about the dragons from the beginning.
But most becouse it was more of a challenging than gothic 2, think about how god it felt in the beginning of the game just sneaking around the forest trying to avoid wolfs, shadowbeasts etc.
Just so you could find a scavanger or a molerat you could take down for the experience.
Or how long it took before you finnaly could take down that damm Lurker over at New Camp.
And when you got fuhrter in to the game you always found new and harder opponents like the bloodhounds.

In G2 you could fight annyting in no time at all.
I allone lifted the siege around Old Camp as a Mercenary only armed with medium Armor and a Orc slayer sword.
But in Gothic 1 it took forever before you could fight Orc's. The Orc cemetary for instanse you fought orc hunters to you finnaly faced the orc warior wich where a real challenge at that level.

Now i only wait for the night of the Raven to make G2 more of a challange.

Gothic 1 was groundbreaking in terms of atmosphere. Gothic 2 by itself wasn't quite as good in this regard, but IMO Gothic 2 plus the Night of the Raven addon definitely is the better of the two Gothics.
