If they are .tga, they should work. Just check the file size to make sure they are not too large.

You need all 5 versions of your portrait: tiny, small, medium, large, huge. Sorry, I don't know what the pixel size of each is.

If you click on each copy of a picture in the folder, you'll be able to get correct file sizes.

(I know I'm late but maybe he still needs help with this problem...)

The correct width and height for each .tga (btw, the portraits must be tga files, so it's correct) :

Huge -> 256x512
Large -> 128x256
Medium -> 64x128
Small -> 32x64
Tiny -> 16x32

Every custom portrait must have all of this five files. Every file must end with its correct letter (h,l,m,s,t). Exemple: yog_sothoth_h.tga for the huge image, yog_sothoth_l.tga for the large, yog_sothoth_m.tga for the medium and so on.
After checked that, try to begin a new game and create a new player and see if you can choose the new portraris. If they don't show up then check that the folder's name is portraits and not portrait.

For now it's all Tell us if the problem remains!
