Hmmmm

Read the interviews with the developers, yes, 50,000 spoken words in dialogue. However, considering the dialogue for the game fills a substantial number of novels (you know, books... those things you read... or maybe not) you'd need several hundred CDs to fit it all on.

There's no way you can compare Gothic npcs to MW npcs.
Simple eqation ...
Number of Gothic NPCs = Number of Morrowind NPCs divided by 1000

Seen too many Gothic fans come on this board and post complaints just for the sake of it. Many reviews of Gothic said it was a big pile of turd for obvious reasons. Compare Gothic NPCs to the detail, personality and dialogue of Baldur's Gate 2 npcs (a similarly sized game), needless to say BG2 owns Gothic in that department. Unless the developers pull their fingers out of their posteriors, Gothic 2 is just as likely as being a huge steaming pile of manure as it's predecessor.

Posting on boards, and starting dirt slinging matches because you have 'favourite game envy' is pretty sad when you get down to it.

If your like me and you love huge,non-linear,immersive,complex,rpgs you'll love this game. I've talked to many in real life who I know love the same types of games I do as well as people online and we all love MW. The point being, If you don't like morrowind its not because morrowind is a "bad" game, or because the developers made a fatal game design error, but because you simply don't like RPGs of this type.

The term RPG has come to mean so many things in the gaming world, its been generalized and bastardized to the point where you almost can't tell at all what type of a game your buying just by reading "RPG" on the box hence yours and others confusion when buying Morrowind, thinking you where going to get Gothic, or Diablo or Wizardry or bauldersgate or freedom force and so on. Even reading previews or game statistics can be deceiving when scouting out a RPG purchase, the few things all these "RPGs" have in common seem to be whats focused on in reviews and even when other aspects of the game are discussed people just assume that all these features and that of they're favorite RPG are going to be included by default. In reality the RPG genre is such a diverse one that you never really know entirely what to expect until you play the game for yourself.

In Morrowind the main plot is not the main feature. The main aspect of Morrowind is molding your character into what ever you wish him to be and enjoying watching him interact with the most complex and largest single player CRPG ever created. In short, Morrowind is about role playing,in its literal sense, and no other CRPG allows you to do it to the extent of MW,Ofcourse MMORPGS have the potential to surpass MW its undeniable that human beings have a far supirior supply of complexity and possibilitys when compared to Morrowinds numerous AI and quest scripts, but none as of yet have in my opinion. The V-A-S-T majority of people simply don't Roleplay in MMORPGS Its just to although I never have tried I have seen people atempt it and its so awkward to try and roleplay with people who you don't know at all. I know I don't roleplay in MMORPGs its not why I or they play them.

I suppose my point is that there's less of an incentive to mold your character and build your skillset when you don't feel as much like you're actually there. Some minor details make a huge difference, like the NPCs for one, the sound effects, inconsistency in graphics, etc.

Not that I am saying Morrowind is a *bad* game. I just think it could have been so much better.

I always roleplayed in UO, if just to mess with people who didn't.

All I can say is no other game, that i've ever play has been more immersive then Morrowind, as far as the graphics and the sound effects are concerned, they both seem more then adequate don't you find it abit nit picky to say that because alot of the visuals in morrowind are superb and some are average that there is a "inconsistency" in graphical presentation, would you rather have no pixel shaded water and have all of the graphics parallel to morrowinds weakest visual? this would be more immersive? not for me.

As to the NPC speech,at the current time it would be a financial impossibility to make the dialog in Morrowind spoken for 2 reasons,

1. it would take much to much time and money to hire voice actors to speak every line of dialog.

&

2.You would need 30 CDs and 15 gigs of hard drive space to hold all the sound files. Its a matter of opinion really, I find 100x the dialog even all in text to be much more immersive then 1% of the dialog all spoken.but to each his own.

Graphical inconsistency... I meant with the character models and, well, everything else.

And with NPCs I was referring to the dialog in general, spoken or not, it's rather dull and repetitive. Since all characters in a town or class say pretty much the same thing, how many actors would you really need? And say you did get acting for every line of text- There is a such thing as compression. Not really worth getting into it tho...

The fact remains that there is about 1000x the amount of unique dialog in MW then there is in Gothic, its just a matter of finding those people as it would be in reality, remeber MWs gameworld is about 20x the size of gothic so they need more peons walking around that dont have much to say just to flesh out the towns. atleast you can ask them about rumors and such to get a feel who your really should be talking to.

Umm I don't see anyone whining here. This forum is for discussing the game, which I think is what we're doing?

I bought my copy at CompUSA and they don't take back games.

YOU are constantly whining and complaining about how much better the Gothic npcs were. You keep going on and on and on about this in multiple topics. We know you dont like it, point taken. Stop about it now. Bah. And as paradox mentioned, you cant possible have been far enough in the game to judge about this. Go and play the game, and come back when you have spend enough time to properly judge about the npc system.

btw I knew what you ment by graphic inconsistency, what I ment by MWs "weak visuals" where the Character models ..however even those are at least on par with gothics , and with armor on they look twice as good.

Hi mephy,
I only made a couple of initial posts. Since then I have just been responding to the thread. I'm sorry it upsets you so much that someone doesn't like an aspect of your beloved game. I suppose I should have to play a game for months before I get an idea of whether or not I like it?

Forget Gothic, BTW, I think just about any other RPG I have played is better in this dept. Again, my opinion, you don't have to agree.

It has nothing to do with agreeing or not agreeing. Put simply, you dont have a clue if the npc system is good, and neither have I. Yes, to fully understand how it works, you have to spend months. Maybe that is were you are mistaken. MW is NOT like Gothic. Gothic was a short RPH which guided you from point A to B to C. MW is 100% complete freedom, and how everything influences each other is one of the unique and great features of this game, or so they say. Unless you played a lot, you cannot comment on this.

And dont take this like a personal attack, I am just growing bored of people who are being negative about features they havent even scratched the surface of.

Um, it's really absurd to say that a person should spend so much time on a game in the hopes that it might get better. And I don't see how this particular aspect could. It's like you're saying that if I play for a few weeks, suddenly the entire NPC conversation system will switch into a different mode, one which I like (!), and I'll come back on here admitting the error of my ways.

In reality I'll just get used to it. And it sucks because a small patch could probably improve the system dramatically.

If this thread bothers you so much you don't have to read it. So touchy. Why start arguments?
