Why are there useless items in the game? Wooden spoons, jugs, plates, wine, mugs, etc.

Why couldn't there have been more useful items like tinderbox and pan so you could cook up your own "grilled meat" in the wild. Or perhaps a sleeping bag or blanket so you can sleep in the wilderness.

Maybe it was to introduce some wierd sense of Ultima-ness to the game but IIRC Ultima also allowed you to use most of the useless items in useless tasks.

They're not useless.
And you can pick up frying pans to cook your grilled meat.

I wouldn't suggest sleeping outside in THAT place. Bloody lizards eat testicles.

Wooden spoons and shit are to stir soups and other food.
Other things like plates, forks, jugs, candlesticks and shit are for giving you extra trade currency.

Steal some guy's tableware, then trade them for a sword

A bed roll would be nice...There are places that would be safe. Like the caves with doors or the caves in the water.
