Director of the film, Edward Zwick, previously directed two respectable films - Glory (Denzel Washington) and Legend of the Fall (Brad Pitt). I liked both films, although they are not particularly excellent films. The Last Samurai secured rather mixed reviews, some like it, some hate it. This latest movie also didn't change my opinion regarding Zwick. The camera works/photography is good, but for me the film didn't offer big catharsis in the end.
It's rather amusing hearing Tom Cruise speaks Japanese.

It's an "uneven" movie. I'm not sure how to describe it other than some parts were excellent, and it had beautiful cinematography, but it trotted out a lot of cliches. I had moments of deja vu from the miniseries Shogun, because Cruise looks too much like Richard Chamberlain (Blackthorne). Some scenes seemed taken from Kurosawa movies. Perhaps it was too much in too little time, although the movie time was already quite long.

I agree. I am a samurai fanatic. I have tons of movies on DVD. Studied the Samurai Sword for a few years. And have a massive book collection on them. I really can't give this movie that high of ratings cause it is not Japanese. I don't think it showed Bujutsu or the mindset of the samurai at all. It was definitely not historical. And if you analyze all the little details it falls apart. But for someone who has never seen a samurai movie they might actually think New Zeleand looks like Japan and think this is the greatest flick ever. And how can anyone take Tom Cruise serious in a Samurai movie? Not only that...why use computer effects in this type of movie? Sword of Doom, Throne of Blood, Chushinigra, Musashi Trilogy, 7 Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, RAN, SHOGUN miniseries, and many many more movies filmed in Japan are much better!

I did not enjoy this movie much because I think the plot is way too far fetched for me. Samurai verses ninja part is great though.

The movie was alright for me, not great, but alright. (BTW, I consider it a good thing that it's not historical. -> When it would be made as a historical movie, you will always see the pro's and contra's of ridiculous groups of people.)

Glory is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Glory and Braveheart are the only two movies that even get me close to choked-up and teary eyed at all.
I've never even heard of Legend at the Fall, is it good?
