|
<a href="http://www.shacknews.com/" target="_blank">Shacknews</a>'s frontpage has news from a '<i>very reputable source</i>', indicating the development of System Shock 3. As the news is on the frontpage and may be hard to find once it is archived, here's the <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?comments=40274" target="_blank">link to their boards</a> with the full news! |

I doubt it's anything more then the name that's being used by EA, it will hardly be a real SS game. |

Actually looks like it might be Doug Church the new EA LA head, from the orginal LG group, he definatly worked on Thief DP, thou I recall Ken Levine wrote the story for Thief DP as well as SS2.
So it is possible that it could be at least good, maybe not as great as Irrational's, but good.
Of course the obvious problem is still EA, since they suck! |

Yeah if its being developed by EA I won't be holding my breath for it. _________________ The Poster Previously Known As NeptiOfPovar |

The last game from EA I purchased was System Shock 2 - I don't expect to ever buy another. |

@ Jadar
that sounds like you didn't like SS2 very much
Normally i would say Bioshock > SS3 but if Dough Church is involved you never know because he is a great dev.. In the end i hope we will see 2 great titles - you can never have enough SShock clones. |

Indeed he is a great dev, and if it were all up to him i'm sure we'd see a worthy sequel.
I think however that this will be another Deus Ex: Invisible War kind of sequel. |

Doug Church rules so hard, he was involved in the development of at least three of my favorite games:
Ultima Underworld 1&2
Thief 1&2
System Shock 1&2
If you wonder why he has "Thief: Deadly Shadows" and "Deus Ex: Invisible War" listed, he's just mentioned in the "Special Thanks". (Same thing with "Deus Ex").
So. I believe he secretly worked on Gothic 1&2, too. Hahahaha. |

Well, I hope they are making it. And if Doug Church is involved then it might actually be good. IF EA doesn't manage to screw it up (and that's a BIG if).
I'd love for it to be a great game (assuming they're even making it). But sadly I agree with slak about it probably being another Deus Ex Invisible War kind of sequel. Meaning a consolized dumbed down piece of garbage with no depth.
But hey, it *might* be in development, and it *might* not suck. That's better than nothing I guess. |

Slak said it in the first reply.
I can go out with my new digital camera and make a film and call it Godfather 4. Seeing that System Shock 2, in my humble opinion, had the best story telling techniques in history, EA better be getting the same team to make it.
Remember when you saw a dead body then a second later, you saw a ghostly in game re-enactment of that person just before he or she died? That blew me away.
The various discs you found that told the story even though everyone was actually dead. Genius. So many games do it now you forget how innovative it was. |

It won't be made by the same people as SS2, because Irrational has just been purchased by T2 and is working on BioShock. However, Doug Church is a studio head at EA - as a few posters have noted - and that might all the difference, assuming he is highly involved in any SS3, which we don't know. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

Hmmm...this seems a LOT like Ultima 9. You know, just because a famous, super-cool designer is (Or might be) heading up a project doesn't mean it will turn out good.
Ultima 9, once Origin was taken over by EA, became embroiled in controversy. Lost employees, broken promises, shortcuts, loss in funding, setbacks, delays...Even with Rich Garriot's talent, the game ended up becoming a complete stinker.
As we all know from the infamous "EA Spouse" and her blog, this company is fond of sticking their noses into the design documents and erasing whatever they want. As great as Doug Church may be, he will still be a slave to EA's white-shirt wearing masters.
I agree with one of the previous posters who said this would be another Deus Ex 2. I'm not expecting anything even remotely "System Shock" about it.
Now Bioshock, on the other hand...I'm fairly certain it will rock. |

Great as SS2 was, it's nowhere near as good as the original!! Recently replayed it and found it just as good as I remembered it. The graphics may not be as wonderful, but it was truly a groundbreaking game. Probably why it didn't sell all that well!! _________________ If God said it, then that settles it!

I wonder if that "source" is the same filing by EA that was reported the other day.
There's not much more news than that other than a "we neither confirm nor deny it" response from EA.
It does bring up the point again of whether or not its just EA protecting its trademarks. You might recall last year EA was threatening cease and desist orders to System Shock modders.
This article also seems to suggest that the protection of Trademark idea may be directly related to the development of Bioshock. Is this a hidden reason for Irrational's willingness to be acquired by Take 2?
The Ultima V Lazarus/GPG/Microsoft partnership has always looked intersting in that regard and the most EA has done to them is make a loaded comment. (My point being is UV:L hasn't made a one direct dime for EA and has sold a lot more copies of Dungeons Siege for GPG and MS than many people might realize). |

I was excited about Bioshock too until I saw that it's also coming out for next-gen consoles. That could very easily be another Deus Ex: Invisible War too. |
