Arx Fatalis - the very first impressions

I got a copy of the full german version from JoWooD yesterday, and so far I had two hours I was able to spend on the game.

There are four things I want to mention:

1. pretty nice performance on my machine (Athlon 1200)
2. The demo isn't really the beginning of the game. Well, yes, it is, but it is incomplete
3. IMPRESSIVE (!!) AI of the NPC's. Those goblins are smart. They run for help. They even wake sleeping goblin lords to chase you.
4. I have the strong feeling that you have to be smart, too, to survive in this game . And your actions do have consequences.

More later in a full review.

Ah, and one VERY funny moment: when you reach the goblin town, one of the goblins goes to the toilet. When you try to follow him, the door of the toilet is locked and he shouts "taken!"

I will begin with Arx Fatalis on Monday - have to finish some minor Morrowind quests.

@HiddenX: are you trying the demo or the complete game? If it's the original game i wish to hear your opinion too!

I am playing the original (in german language). I am still at the beginning of the game. I am enjoying the game, it is a mix of Ultima Underworld, Dungeon Master and Stonekeep with some good humor thrown in. The monster-AI is real good, the dungeon feeling is good, and it is addictive so far.

i had some crashes to the desktop when loading a savegame, but i could solve this problem by switching the gfx-resolution from 1024x768 to 800x600.

I thought that the game would hit the store only the 22th July! How lucky you are... so all the German ppl can play it... if only i wished to study German and not English!!!

I am totally fluent in german but i am still waiting for the international version. Just in case the censoring made them change more than just drops of blood (as it often does).

On the other hand, with the developers being french and the publisher german, i am wondering what the respective quality (in the language, writing etc) will be of the different language versions.

Gothic for example sounds and reads better in german. It's very well translated but there's no doubt it is translated from german and not the other way around.

I wonder what the situation is in Arx

I´ve been playing the german version since the week it came out and due to my limited time, I´m currently about 70% into the game, I guess (crypt level 2 meteor quest). My impression is, that they hired professional actors, and the quality of speech is somewhere between excellent and lousy. You can find the full spectrum, qualitywise. The goblins for instance are excellent, other voice overs are mediorce. The dialog scripting itself is ok pretty much at the same level as as the voice overs with the full band of quality. I´d say qualitywise it is on the same level as Gothic, ofthen the same voices were used. And yes it is an excellent game.
