It is a sequel to Divine Divinity.
Although there is going to be a Divine Divinity 2 also.
You aparently have two characters, the one you make and also a demon knight. |

i heard the story of riftrunner will be similar to divine divinity and dd2 will be something completely different. Different story. |

I could be very off target here (it has been over a month since I read the news releases), but RR is supposed to be set in the DD universe, but, as craptor said, it is *not* DD2.

Universe in some sense of the word yes.
"Riftrunner takes place on a different planet named Nemesis which does not only look like a demonic plane with its volcanic rock faces and rivers of glowing lava, but the borders of this world that link it to the demonic planes are much weaker than those in Rivellon.'
This is where you, a follower of the Divine order end up after starting on a quest to remove someone of th Black Ring. Instead of succeeding you end up on this planet, soul-forged with a demonic knight. A demon which you dislike so much, but who in turn dislikes you in an eqaul amount. however you will both have to survive this as when one dies the other dies as well.
The story takes place 20 years from DD and doesn't follow the Divine One, which you became in DD. It can be played without having the original DD. It will see several changes. The most noteworthy ones are (to me atleast):
- 3D characters in a 2D background
- A completely new skill and experience system (no more classes like in DD)
- A battlefield, where areas and quests are randomly generated.
- A party that can be controlled. Your party can be made up of more than just the deadknight and you.
