High speed systems?, max out on the graphicsboard? max out on the soundcard ? . Morrowind runs smoothly without videohiccups on this system, 1024x768, all in game sound&video setting 1 (one) notch down from max:
AMD 1Ghz, 512Mb (PC133) Gf3Ti200 , 7 year old Sb AWE32 , nothing overclocked and to keep things running extra smoothly, I run a virusscanner, a firewall, a mailer and a server in the background.
What I don't do is follow the FPS=everything hype, I just play the game and enjoy it. |

To Guest (sorry, can't stop myself): HAHAHA...Keep sleeping, or look at any GF4200 and 4400 review...No any difference... And 4400 <-> 4600 5-10% increase...
Processor and memory are the bottlenecks. Starting from GF3 you need to have something faster than 1GHz, 1.4 for Ti4xxx. And the way MW is rendering stuff is not optimised - it's rendering all hidden objects in your sight. Again it's not a NetImmerse, but MW issue. For now the only way to improve performance is to get faster processor and more RAM. Or wait for the patch and hope that BethSoft will change the rendering algorithms...
Just for a reference:
Athlon 850
192 Mb PC100 RAM
GF3 Ti 200 o/c to 210/450
AI distance all way down
pixel shading on
sound - high quality
music - on
view distance - 1/2
quadratic lights on
FPS:
Balmora - 11-19
outside - 24-37
dungeons - 45-70
To Guest: Yes, I know I don't have enough memory, yes I know my graphic card is crap, yes I know that Athlon 850 sux, yes I know AI distance low is killing all the fun... |

Can we stop nit-picking about FPS please?
Morrowind is a great game, both graphically, and developmentally. Let's stick to the topic (morrowind) and not debate hardware.
Hardware is a topic for "Tom's Hardware Guide" forums.... |

There is a huge diff in performance between the ti4200 4400 and 4600. The reviews will show you a graph and it doesnt look like much but it is. Its all advertisement. Bottom line is you get what you pay for. But the ti4200 and 4400 are good cards. |

How about some helpful posts? |

Check your sliders for shadows and distance... go into the advanced section of your display settings and make sure everything is optimized. For instance, turn off all AA to get better frame rates, turn Direct3d to "Best Performance" instead of "Highest Quality". Also keep in mind that WindowsXP is a resource hog in itself. I don't recommend less than 256mb RAM just for WinXP! I'm running Win98 and getting about 30-60 FPS with my GeForce4 Ti4200 in 1024x768 all graphics sliders about half-way. I also recommend getting the newest drivers you can find... I have version 29.42 (sorry, I can't remember where I found them... just do a search on Google). You should be able to get an additional 5-10 FPS if you overclock your video card to 300 core/580 mem. Please post your 3dMark2001 scores!
Hope some of this is helpful, unlike a couple responses I just read.

Lordr31z I guess you are right about the advertisemet, but don't you think that if there actully is a big difference, then they would show that so that people would buy the more expensive video card. I'm still going to get a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 in about a month or so, but I am planning to get the 128 MB version. Because for people like me (finishing 8th grade) it's very hard to get $400, to buy a GF4 Ti 4600.
To the person who got 5 FPS on a GF4 Ti 4200: I can't say any thing different from oter people's replies, just get a better CPU and more RAM (switch to the DDR version).
My comuter specs.:
Windows ME
Athlon XP 1600+
256 MB PC2100 DDR
GF2 Ti 64Mb
AI distance half way
Pixel shading off
Sound - Low quality
Music - on
View distance - Full
Resolution - 1600-1200(I just can't go back to lower resolutions, because anything below that looks ugly)
FPS:
Balmora - 7-25
Outside - 13-20
Dungeons - 25-109
P.S. My FPS in the dungeons constantly keeps swiching from low to very high numbers and I do not know why. I have not updated any drivers, its been like half a year since I got this computer. |

I was running a P-3 600mgz PC 100 RAM 512MB with a 3dfx 5000 Bidio Card. I upgraded my Vidio card to a Nvidia 4600ti in anticipation for Marromind Thinking to upgrade the rest later. The results were that the game ran fine. In fact I got all the extra water effects of thw water that was incredible. The game ran rather well. The water effects at full detail with my vidio card were great except for the occaisional stop while loading a new inviornment.
Mistakenly I read too much crap on this board. I went out and bouaght a 1.9 Gig Intel with a 645 MSI MB and PC2700 DDR 512MB RAM to fit my new Nvidia Card. The results were miniscule. A P-3 system will run Morromind with the right vidio card.
A barebones Case/MB/Processor/Memory will cost about the same as a Nvidia 4600. A new systme if you have a hard drive will cost under $800. |

I'm sure you have another problem.
I have a duron 750
256 MBSDRAM
and a GeFORCE2MX400
i put distance view at 45% ,and i have 10-17 fps in balmora, 15-25 fps outside and 30-40fps inside.
Maybe you video card is a little bit too strong for you processor(1.2 GHZ ).
good luck (sorry for my poor english, i'm french ). |

I know i'm a little late for this whole conversation but i want to note, that in res lower then 1024x768 a geforce1 or better card will work SLOWER then in higher resolutions this is because the cards gpu isent used at 100% its odd but my friend that used to workd at 3dfx said tahts how it works |

Well, I got tired of playing in slow motion on my desktop and tried a little experiment. I took Morrowind and installed it on my laptop. Here are the specs:
PIII 1.0 Ghz
256MB PC133 SDRAM
Nvidia Geforce2Go 32MB
30GB ATA66 5400 RPM hard drive
With distance maxed out, no shadows I get about 10 FPS at a rough spot in Balmora. In the same spot on my GeForce4 system, I get 8 FPS. Sure, the processor is slower on the GF4 PC, but it benchmarks about 2.5 times faster than the laptop. I've got the same Detonator drivers on both systems. So why is the GF4 25% *slower* than a GF2? It just doesn't make any sense... |

This game never has made any sense. But try other games you will see a huge difference. I think the problem is that it took to long to make this game and in the pc world that isnt good. New video cards come out to quick. |
