Join the Sixth House?

Greetings all. Recently a 'sleeper' stopped me in town and told me to come to Red Mountain and join Dagoth Ur & the Sixth House. Tonight I finished a quest involving me going to Ilunibi cave and killing a Dagoth Ares (don't remember exact name). Anyway, before we fought he asked if I would want to join the Sixth House. There was no option to join, he just said something along the lines of, "Will you drop your weapon and join me, or kill me?" I tried not killing him and leaving, but I cannot continue the main storyline that way. If I kill him, the 'sleepers' in town tell me I have betrayed Dagoth Ur. The more I think about it, the more joining the Sixth House sounds like fun. Is it even possible to join? I mean, surely a low-level character like me can't just waltz into Red Mountain and join up. Wouldn't all the baddies kill me before I ever got there? Thanks in advance.
