The death of Midgard and the fate of the loyal fan |
|
If any of you were looking forward to the MMORPG Midgard then you probably know it has been indefinitely suspended (again) and, according to Funcom, if it ever restarts production, it won’t be until the year 2006 at the earliest. This is somewhat frustrating, however it is not what angers me. What does anger me is that the “Ex-Game Director of Midgard (RIP)” Ragnar Tornquist announced about a month ago that the fate of Midgard was decided, yet despite the fact that after a 10-11 month hold on the project there was still a small group of very loyal posters on their forum. And these very loyal fan were left wondering about the fate of the game, without so much as being given a clue, for an entire month. So this is how much the video game companies really appreciate the players! |

The news about Midgard really upset me.
Midgard was the only MMORPG that I was looking forward to as much as I was looking forward to the original Middle-Earth Online. _________________ --

According to some, Funcom is in financial difficulties right now, which would explain the reason behind Midgard being pushed back but not officially canceled. Funcom is probably banking a lot of hope with the upcoming AO "booster Pak" which could give them a second wind. Unfortunately I doubt anything they could do will save AO, and so I think Funcom will fold before long...
Otherwise I would say that the lack of feedback from the Midgard guys is pretty typical of what type of customer relationship I saw throughout AO's life. Which is not much...
It's all a big mess... I can't say I really am disapointed by Midgard's delay as I have stayed very far away from the game since my experience with AO. _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=

Not quite RPG related, I learned Fucom to love when I played their excellent The Longest Journey Adventure, which also sold quite well. To bad, if Funcom folds, than I can say, what a loss. The story of TLJ was never fully told (the ending was quite open), and a possible sequel was killed due to the fact that FunCom went onto the online gaming adventure. To bad... I hope Funcom will survive and will be able to make TLJ2. After all Tornquist is an amazing storyteller and I think games like TLJ are the strong side of Funcom. |

Let's not get mixed up here though: Funcom is a publisher, not a devolopper. Midgard could eventually be picked up by another publisher if Funcom folds/lets go of the rights to the game (which is unlikely IMO). As for TLJ, I don't think it was an overly successful game, although critically acclaimed. Funcom being in financial difficulties it would be unlikely that they would ever gamble some money on a sequel to a title that wouldn't be a hit. So the same scenario as Midgard goes for TLJ. Their only hope right now is for AO to pick up _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=
