First of all this was such a great game! bugs and all.

Now to the topic, I think the sleeper has nothing to do with the barrier, the sleeper was just a threat to all those under the barrier and had to be destroyed. The barrier is still standing and most probably will be in both gothic 2 and 3 as there is lots to be discovered and questions to be answered.

Maybe the barrier just gets bigger. But my guess is that it will be gone, replaced by more physical barriers like rivers, oceans and cliffs.

Guys, THE BARRIER IS GONE at the end of Gothic. The hero distinctly says that after the Sleeper was dead, "The barrier had fallen, but for me, the adventure was just beginning."
Beat the game again and listen. He says this as clear as day.

Its a pity as what did killing the sleeper have to do with the barrier? it doesnt make sense, what caused the barrier to go away? as the sleeper didnt release any energy, he just got sucked up to his own dimension wherever that may be.

I will finish it again tonight and hear it again to hear what i missed.

Let's put two and two together and see what we come up with.
The Sleeper was responsible for the barrier getting too large in the first place. It's his evil power that amplified and sustained the magic dome over all these years. Carefully listening to a few of Xardas' lines makes this point quite clear. He says he knows why the barrier got too big, and he also ties the Sleeper to this, and when the Sleeper dies the Barrier falls.
Therefore 12 magicians + Xardas + Sleeper =oversized barrier sustained by the Sleeper's power.
And consequently oversized barrier - Sleeper = no barrier.
I'm pretty sure this is how it all works out.

Why would the sleeper contain himself in a barrier? It doesnt seem to make sense that sleeper provides the power to the barrier, As altough he is sleepin he still managed to posses some of the sect camp to try and awaken him... well i think the story is a bit fuzzy and some things dont click into place...

I thought it made perfect sense.

Maybe in the sequel it will explain the exact reasoning of why the sleeper did what he did, and how exactly he effected it, who knows who cares...
