Right Golden Mage. I like them text-based, and I also liked Zork. Sheesh, the parser...! Now that was some ability to interpret things. You could do nearly anything!

While it's not a 100% pure RPG, it's more a Diablo's grandfather, I found
nethack really fun to play. The complexity, depth and replay value greatly
surpass most, if not all, modern day games. If you're bored one day, I
greatly suggest you take a look, just take the time to read the docs before
playing.

IMHO I prefer to play the text version, but I can understand people being

Sure, they are great fun for those that enjoy them and I don't begruge them that.

The so called IF or "Interactive Fiction" means more or less "text adventure games". Not RPG with stats and fighting and such. But games with stories and puzzles.

Second, I don't really agree about that step backward thing. Text adventures allow for problem mechanics that simply can't be implemented in 3D graphical systems. How do you "smell" or "feel" in a graphical game, for example?

Also, they are more like books compared to graphical games that are more like movies. Do you think books are somehow backwards?

Anyway, somebody already posted the links about the if archive. Just know that there are still very good games being produced (99% of the free), up to the Infocom standards and even better.

There is also a yearly competition which gets dozens of short game entries each year.

These games make you think hard and good ones can immerse you just like Morrowind or whatever.
