OK, I just completed Gothic and think it is the best RPG, far better than BG2.
Here is a review of it:
As Uriziel slashed through the last of the demons and the last blade was put in the heart, I knew I had completed a truly amazing game. My first thoughts as I played were of annoyance at the control system but after about an hour of playing I got used to them. The freedom in the first 5 hours of play was stupendous- if you could get past the monsters then you could explore, the area and speak to anyone, WITH SPOKEN DIALOGUE. I really really liked the difference between the 3 camps, it wasn't just that one was good and the others bad, they each had their own merits and downfalls. Music doesn't usually add much to a game but I felt the ambient music was spot on! Graphics were good too! THINGS TO IMPROVE:
1. Better control system
2. Better ending.
I rate it 95% please reply if you agree/disaggree
Better Ending

Yeah, I agree with 95% rating. But I'd have a link to a FAQ explaining the controls so new players don't get discouraged.

Although I didn't like the way it ended, I would definitely give it a 95% rating .

things to fix:
1. I would try and work on some of the bugs in the game. Like the winch problem and lester.

I also found that the game would freeze in certain areas, so I had to avoid them.
I'm glad that they pushed back the release date of Gothic 2. Hopefully the bugs that were in Gothic 1 will be fixed.

I agree with the overall score, but I also feel that the conrols were just fine with me and there were surprisingly intuitive. Only one thing that I had to look up in the settings/keyboard was the jumb/climb combination. Maybe it's my 14 years of gaming?

I didn't have problems with the controls at all... the problems start when I play a shooter right afterwards, though .

I didn't have any problems with the controls either but It's just that I tried to consider the points of view from people who give up if they can't complete a game in five minutes. I really like the way you can slash from left to right more realistically than in most games!

I didn't like how the game got somewhat linear, forcing you into the New Camp. I think the game would have been alot better if you could have beaten the game working for either one of the 3 factions, with a different ending depending on the faction you played for.

Other than that though I thought it was a really good game and would agree with the 95% rating.

If you work for the Brotherhood, you don't get forced into the New Camp ever.

Lester's friend: if I find the time I'll do a scan of a pic of the Gothic comic book pre-Brotherhood Lester for you, okay?

He looked a lot like Johnny Rotten...

i do agree about gothic beig awsome, the controles were tricky though, at first it took me a while to figure out how to put stuff into my inventory, i think it is the best 3d rpg ever. and i cant wait until #2 comes out, i want to see a dragon.

Would have been so much better if the controls were the same or similar to Oni.

If you havent played Oni its quite similar to gothic but the controls and the fighting are much better done and in a much simpler manner. Oni isnt an RPG though but it does have RPG qualities. (You can learn better fighting combos as you advance through the game etc.)

Perhaps a consideration for Gothic 2
