this is embarassing asking all these Wiz8 questions, bad enough the game is like 3 years old but on top of that, my cable was out entire memorial day weekend (3days) and this was when I learned the most about the game so...
Will you gain more exp with a 6 way split (or is the exp scaled too)
Will you miss out on anything insightful from not having them around?
Will the game be impossible with just 6? |

The XP for any given critter stays the same. You divide that XP by the size of your party (something between 1 and 8 ), and that's what you get.
Vi adds a little bit to the main story line, but that's about it, AFAIK.
Your three "resident experts" (that's otter, bilbo, and yours truly, in case you didn't recognize our immense knowledge ) are all anti-RPC. I only recruit them long enough to get XP out of them, and then they're gone. We've all won repeatedly with no recruits. As for the game being impossible, not even close. otter has solo'ed a few times (your party has just one character) and won the game. IIRC, he actually favors a 3 character party over all others, thinking that he can cover all the necessary skills while only splitting the XP pie three ways. My winners were all 6 character parties, although I spent some quality time with a foursome. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Yah, my fave is 3. Twice the XP over 6, and still lots of ways to have enough variety of skills. Most of my wins have been 3 or 4. 2 or 1 is real hard because there's just not enough swings per round--you gotta stock up on either Stamina Potions or have Rest-All. But i did 1 twice and 2 four times. You get powerful really fast with fewer in the group. _________________ If thousand-year-old family traditions are so important to you, why do you have indoor plumbing and electricity in your family's house? |

Well, I'm not exactly anti-RPC. They do have their uses. But the drawback to them is that they're XP leeches, as Dte explained. Best use is to plug holes your party lacks - e.g. most parties of 6 have either a bard or a gadgie, but not both, so maybe you recruit the one you lack; or an extra sword arm; or a ranger for scouting if you didn't start with one; etc.
First time through, I kept Val around throughout the game and won with her in the party. Used other RPCs as I felt like, generally travelling with the full party of 8 until the endgame.
Second time through, I only used RPCs for quests - Val, and 3 others. (I won't spoil it here by telling who they are) and I ditched them right after their respective quests. I did every quest in the game to maximize XP for my party.
Third time through - I am using RPCs again. I picked a relatively weak party on purpose, and I feel I need the extra sword arms. Maybe I'll drop them later once I get to around level 14; if I play this party through that far. Since I'm not out to maximize XP, this is OK. _________________ The world itself shifts and changes and fades to mist like the strings of a minstrel's harp, and mayhap the dreams we forge are more enduring than the works of kings and gods.-Robert E. I played nearly whole game without N(R)PC (with only 6 my own characters). I tried Vi for 10 min. and Miles for 15 min. |
