I know this is a fairly old post, but as I am playing Wiz 8 through for the first time I was interested in the comments.

I bought the game when it first came out, and abandoned it part way through. The combat system drove me nuts! But having subsequently played my way through hundreds of hours of Might and Magic, I now find the combat quite doable (although a trifly boring at times).

On the whole, though, I have been very pleasantly suprised by the game, even though it's quite old. I had no idea it was so huge and complex. I just finished with the Sea Caves areas, and that was great fun.

Now that I know what mistakes to avoid next time (like belatedly turning my thief into a gadgeteer at level 12 instead of just starting with the gadgeteer) I'm looking forward to my next game.
