I would advise you to learn to take a few trophies. This will gat you some of the cash that you need. Get an apprenticeship as well (I went for Harad, 100gp a blade isn't too shabby.) I also spent most of my LP before I was a mage on 1H swords and strength. Then, when I was a mage I devoted myself to mana, runes and circles of magic. _________________

After you become a novice (and than a mage) the cost for increasing weapon skills and strength and dexterity double. So, if you want to use some weapons as a mage as well learn it befor you join the monastry. Also, rune stones, which you need to create spell runes, are quite rare in the game, about 20 if you find them all. Only learn 1 or two (the most powerfull) spells from each circle otherwise you will run out of rune stones.
