Which developers consistantly put out the buggiest games? Stuff you would think they are charging you $40 to beta test for them?

Hm. All makers of MMORPG's for sure. All others who are forced to rush out the game. Just two games come to my mind Descent to Undermountain and Daggerfall.

Well it's impossible to get anything on the market without bugs. It's impossible to test all variations that hundred of thousands of game players might come up with. What is important is the magnitude of the bugs, the amount and the speed with which you react on them.
Online games have an additional problem, when thousands of new players start to access the server for the first time at the same moment. This happened to both Anarchy Online and WWII.
Anarchy online had an open beta test for one month and then despite the problems decided that they would go gold. If you compare this behaviour to Lineage, where they had an open beta test for several months, to resolve most of these problems. Then you can only conclude that apparently they were in need of money fast.

I agree that you can not find all the bugs before you release, but you can find most of them. I develope software and we do thorough testing to get rid of bugs. Do we get them all? Of course not, but darned if we don't get a heck of a lot of them. I don't think I could say our projects are of the magnitude of a game. But there are many instances where they could have done MUCH better to remove bugs before release. Ultima 9, Anarchy Online. Needing money fast is not a very good excuse for putting out a shoddy product. There are other ways to do that, such as a limited price beta test. Its not fair to people to make them think they are getting a good product when you know full well it is full of bugs like that.

best thing to do for buggy games:
wait 1/2 year for a major bugfix/patch.
latest example: Evil Islands - (Rage Of Mages in 3d) was nearly unplayable at first - but with the latest patch I had a lot of fun with it. |

On the other hand, Ultima 9 came out with a Final patch and refused to work on it further, and it still had quite a few bugs in it!

Well, if Origin was still around I would name them....unforgivable what they did with U9.
Since Ultima 4 was the game that got me hooked on rpg's I still think U9 could have been a great rpg...if they only took a little more time...sigh.
Funcom is another, more recent name, that comes to mind.
They have *A LOT* of patching to do before AO should be really concidered "110% playable".
I don't think I will get excited quickly when they would announce another game in the future.

I don't think I could play a game from a company called "Funcom". That is the most horrible name I can think of. Maybe other than "Crap Games Inc"... First thing Funcom needs to do is fire the guy who came up with the name. I figured they would be mentioned though after reading reviews about how badly full of bugs it is, and how they released the game way before it was ready.
