Which skills should I advance in as a Mercenary?

Should I advance in thieves skills at all? What should be my first priority, melee or ranged weapons? Should I choose one or two handed weapons?

Thank you

advance in thieves skills if you plan on joining the secret theives guild.
2 handed weapons are generally better, as its harder for opponents to reach you, and they tend to do more damage, since you won't use 2 handed weapons early on, it's recomended to use 1 handed at first and improve that skill untill you have 2 handed weapons at your disposal. Also improve bow and crossbow as well, since by the end of the game you should be able to max out combat skills, and it's often hellpful to have good bow skills.

You can learn some thief stuff for free in the thieves guild.
