Ok then, you DEFINATELY remember something that does'nt exist. The mind can play tricks on you and over time it is possible to remember things that never occurred.

Jesus, what more do you want? A dev, who would know, says it does'nt exist. Many talented people have found ZERO indication of this in the files. Thousands and thousands of players have not found it....and did I mention the MAKER of the game says it does'nt exist!

I put alot of effort into trying to prove this quest existed, but I am not angry that we got joked. I enjoyed playing Gothic again, and even enjoyed dissecting the code. Heck, I even hope the devs of G3 will read this thread and "hide" something for us.

I never had a "cause", and your cause is now simply hopeless and unfounded. Anyway, this is getting silly.

I predict the search will keep going until Gothic III comes out. After which nobody will care anymore cause G3 is out...

I have reformatted my hdd's and made a fresh installation of gothic as i wasn't happy using an old savegame (a bit overpowered - thanks to Uocjat for pointing this out) this feels much better now. I have quickly caught up to level 19.

Stage - 3
Up to now, not been agressive to any npc, also now, although they can be dodged - i have killed the orcs in the orc cemetary because maybe that part is in the "pre-patched" normal storyline. Have left the water for Lefty quest untouched as well as the Scatty quest. Retrieved and returned the almanac, then cleared the old mine minecrawlers, got the queens eggs and returned them to Cor Kalom. Invoked the sleeper, cleared out the orc cemetary, spoke with Thorus and became a guard, got the medium guard armour.
Ready to speak with Saturas, and reluctantly hand over the focus stone and almanac. Up to now this has been a normal game but soon we must divert slightly from the normal storyline, this is a critical pivot point and a permanent save game must be kept before speaking to Saturas. As we progress there will be points where we have to stop the game and openly discuss ideas how to achieve the interpreted hidden meanings of the various books and strategies. It may may sound 'too deep' for some players, but if you are not certain, just tag along.

Obviously, I cannot go on forever trying to solve this riddle, so in some ways this "live-run" of the game could be the "last-ditch" attempt by me (and with the help of other members) at the full, previously undocumented interpretation of the the full added quest, of the true chromanin revelation. I will try to cut out the "gobbledegook" and will give it my best shot.

I think that if a developer were standing in front of him with a print out of the source code and a class to open the entire gothic.dat he still wouldn’t cry fault on this topic. The fact that it’s not in the code is enough for me. Even without this quest Gothic is still a magnificent piece of work.

We’re looking at a textbook case of why people believed the world was flat for so long.

ok first of all the world IS flat and when you drop off the edge you fall into a world filled whit fire and dino's

second i have a good reason for but buying this claim from a former dev guy from PB
and its really simple ..
if he wasnt the guy who made the quest then theres a really good chance that he wouldnt know jack about it
sometimes a single person working on a game might add his own esteregg whitout the knowlage of the rest of the team

Uocjat,

You are correct; I've seen many Easter eggs added by single persons without other's knowledge.

Many things like secret buttons, little bitmaps, sounds, etc…

Never have I seen someone create an entire 3D room, items, and a person out of hard coded vertices, normals, motions, and sounds, then obfuscate this in the compiled code (as Wulf claims)... and have no one else notice.

They would have had to coordinate the creation of the new sound files with one part of the team, the creation of the room, items, and guy with another, and the script for the new, separate, quests yet again with another. This entire time NOT using the built in script system for the game.

The PB team that created Gothic was too small. This is the real world and it -is not- that simple.

Fact is the only new items for the Stranger quest were the bitmaps for the books, which technically is a little bit of text in the gothic.dat.

by now i have gain a pretty decent knowlage of how the gothic script files work
and it seems to me that to make the room and mad the items would propperly only take up about a 10kb file ... which is alot for a script granded but its doable and all this could as wulf has already said be made up from te already exsisting parts of the game .. this is very easy to see if you try makeing your own NPC .. you dont need a model or any other fansy stuff just just need a script tell gothic where to place him what he should look like what he should do and such
it will take you about 5 mins to make an npc

True, the file size would be small.

However, no such file exists and there are certainly no sound files containing any such conversation and side quest.

well basicly you have no way to besure that the file isnt there unless you somehow managed to decompile every file of the game
looking through the gothic mod kit will be of very little help .. if you play around whit it abit you'll soon find that the mod kit is tainted and therefor NOT a reliable source of information in this matter
and another thing is that you wouldnt really need sound files
it could be done whit subtitels or whit somekind of build in text-to-speech program .. grandted the last one would be abit more work but i do think that its possible for gothic .. im not 100% sure about it but it wouldnt amaze me if such a thing was there

Been there, done that. There are several files remaining from removed/unfinished quests, but none relate to this hoax.

I even ran a decompiled compare of the cd's, a fresh install, and 39 games in various stages too hopefully find a newly generated fileset........nada.

Gothic.dat is a configuration file that decides what to call and when based on where you are in the game as triggers. It contains all the quests for the game, including Chromanin. I stated this previously and described what was loaded when in the quest. It also contains the text data for things like books, weapons, and other items.

It's a standard IO data file, you can open it with a hex editor. It's all there, none of it's hidden.

man some of you guy should really check out some of my other posts ..

i know very well what the gothic.dat file is and what it does and i also know how to compile a new one from the modkit but all that is useless seens the modkit is as i said tainted and the reason why i needed to know how to decompile the .dat file is because of my modings needing the english version of the .dat file otherwise its gonna keep being a english/german hybrid
and opening it whit a hex editor would not help me seens i need the files it contains not the codeing

oh and just incase some of you are confused about how the gothic.dat file works here a quick explanation

the mod kit got a whole bunch of .d scripts containing all the info for the game .. weapons .. cam possions .. dialogs .. and other stuff the game needs
then we have the .src files which is a list of all the .d scripts the game should use .. these files are also the ones to be compiled along whit all the .d scripts into a .dat file when reparseing script files in the gothicstarter ..

Several tools, PE Explorer for instance, can get you the class data you seek.
