How many people going to googlefight have actually heard of the Gothic series though?

Actually the results come directly from Google, so the popularity of googlefight.com isn't relevant.

But it's still not a very scientific result. I mean, some of the results are obviously flawed.

^It's the number of times the items appear on the 'net (according to Google's searches), so it doesn't matter whether people go to Google or WoG -- Google has counted more references to Oblivion than G3.

It shouldn't surprise anyone, however.

Bethesda has regular updates on their site, including weekly screenshot releases, several magazine articles including a huge cover special and several interviews with major sites like GameSpy.

On the other hand, Piranha Bytes has only done some interviews with fan sites, there isn't anything on PB's site (I can't see it, anyway) and the only "official screenshot" JoWood sent out with the announcement was one piece of (old) concept art.

I'd say that fight is flawed or should I say fixed, not the result. With correct spelling Monroe wins.

Goodness me, well spotted!

Yes, much better, thank you!

BUT, you are likely to get many hits on oblivion that are not connected to ES4 at all. And you get much more hits on "Gothic 3" than Gothic3.
This is a more fair faight I think:
http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=%22gothic+3%22&word2=elder+scrolls+oblivion

You get about 1/10th of the hits on elder scrolls oblivion compared to just oblivion, so it's probably somewhere between those two.

Actually, Toaster, to be precise about the googlefight, it should be like this :

http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=%22elder+scrolls+oblivion%22&word2=%22gothic+3%22

Or like this :

http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=%22gothic+3%22&word2=%22elder+scrolls+oblivion%22

Notice how the results vary in both cases if you just switch the places of the "fighters", which should be examplary to the correctness of the results.

The more hits both sides return the more accurate it becomes... for example

http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=disco&word2=techno

Heh.

If you want gothic to win... here

http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=gothic+computer+roleplaying+game&word2=oblivion+computer+roleplaying+game

Victory is ours.

Now now, can't go comparing an entire series to a single game. Perhaps you meant this?

Searching on Gothic 3 on Google gives you LOTS of hits totally irrelevant. It's pages with gothic somewhere on the page and 3 somewhere else. So most of the hts you get are either about G1 and 2 or gothic music, and there happened to be a 3 as well. So "Gothic 3" IS better if you want to get relevant results.

This whole idea is pointless, you know. It doesn't even represent how popular a game actually is.

Of course its pointless. No one said there was a point. Its just a bit of fun...

@ Toaster:

Enclosing Gothic 3 in quotes but not oblivion is unfair. This is "better"
