We CRPG players are normally not the first to upgrade our PC's, mostly because our game types, until now, don't require the monster GHz machines, yet!
Personally I still got my now 3 years old Pentium III 350MHz machine with an upgraded GTS 2 64Mb graphichs card, and 256Mb 100MHz SDRAM! SB live sound card!
It still works adequate for my needs, and I guess a good graphic card, can make up for a lot of MHz on the CPU. The bottle neck!
So anyone out there with the brand new Athlon /Pentium GHz machines? |

No until later today. I also run a P III 350, with 256 megs and a Geforce (first one). It's good for most RPG's, but it isn't good enough for some (Gothic, for example).
Since a friend's computer broke down recently, I am selling mine and will get an Athlon 1333 with 512 megs, 40 gig hd and a Geforce 2. I hope this will be enough for games like Morrowind *g*.
Is it really necessary? No, if you are only playing RPG's. But I am not. I love a decent shooter from time to time, and I am still fooling around with custom levels for Unreal. A fast processor really helps then.
My computer cycles last for 18 months. Every 18 months, I buy the second best out there (the best is too expensive, compared to the advantage you get from it).

I have tried the Gothic demo, and I have no serious lags. But I guess it's mostly because of my GTS 2 graphic card!
Aah yes, the mindless shooters, they really demand top notch hardware. But I rarely play them alone, mostly on netcafe's with a bunch of childish (including myself)working colleagues.
My cyclus is normally 3 years before I buy a new PC, but my current PC still feels adequate for my needs!
I also buys the second best (clock frequence)CPU on the market, to be able to affort it. The few MHZ more or less is not making a big different. But on graphic card side I buy nothing less than the best! Today I would defently go for the Geoforce 3. It's expensive, yes, but in a few month you may need to change the second best anyway!
Okay it's also a fine line, to be aware of, if this new product really is that much better than the second best in relation to it's higher price. It's hell out there on the hardware marked! |

I upgraded recently to an AMD Athlon 1 gig processor overclocked to 1.3 gig, 512 PC133 ram, SB Live with the Cambridge Soundworks speaker system, Intelli mouse, I kept my 32 meg TNT2 Ultra video card from my old system. I just scrape in for the recommended specs for Horizons, except for the video card.
Oh yeh, and a 40 gig QF hard drive.

I prefer the ATI graphics line myself. I upgrade in pieces parts, haven't bought a new computer in at least ten years. I just rotate parts in and out. I am currently at 933 MHz, with a Radeon AIW, 40 Gig, 256 MB. It runs anything I have come acrossed well enough. I am probably going to be outfitting my father in law with a new rig shortly, will see how the radeon 2 looks before deciding on a video card <:

Within 2 weeks I will be upgrading my current system. I can run anything up to now on my P3 450, 256 ram and Geforce 2 MX setup.
BUT....there's this game that has gone gold, Max Payne, that is hungry for more power
So I will be buying a Athlon 1.2 GHz, Aopen mobo, Geforce 2 GTS (32 megs ddr memory) to be able to play Max Payne as it is intended.
I might buy another 256 ram because it's rather cheap at the moment but I'm not sure about that.
My setups last for about 18 months untill, like most of you seem to do also, I must buy the 2nd or 3rd best cpu/video card out there.
Seriously though, the computing power we can get these days for so little money (relativly speaking) is just staggering.
I'm a happy gamer

Oh almost forgot: I used to have a TnT2 Ultra card but about 2 months ago got a Geforce 2 MX. And boy, do these modern day graphics cards make a HUGE difference!
So my point is that if you would need an upgrade you could probably do very nice for yourself whith just a new graphics card.
Since they all have their own processers onboard it can alleviate some load off your cpu.
It can really make a lot of difference.

Its true, a Geforce MX2 can make a HUGE differance. I have a P3 500, 128 ram, and have had no problems with Gothic or Black and White. There is no possibility of me upgrading untill next year, as I cannot afford it. Luckily Arcanum and Divine Divinity should work just fine. The only game I am worried about is Morrowind. I would like to get the new Duke Nuke 'em, but I know I will have to wait 'till my next PC. |

Err... it may very well be the other way around, Jay. Your next PC will have to wait for Duke Nukem

Isn't that where the name came from. How long are you going to have to wait for Duke Nukem? Forever!

Hehe, true.
The last game I waited so long for was Ultima 9. |

Ah yes, Ultima 9....such a shame that great series had to end in that way...
Here's hoping the Duke WILL deliver the goods as promised!
But I have a feeling he will. It's like the man says: "I'm here to kick ass or chew bubblegum...and I'm all outta gum"
Heh, I love those cool one-liners of the Duke
