Think they're kinda neutral, but get along better with the mercenaries than with the paladins
simple, consider monstry to be the sect camp of G1, the town and it's paladins can be the old camp, and the farmers and mercenaries, the new camp  |

*Ahem*
I would like to change your post a little:
Mages = Old camp.
They are powerfull like hell, they are very greedy (sp?) and they don't care about others.
Merceneries = New camp.
They are rouges, they work for a farmer that is allmost as powerfull as the king.
Paladins = Sect camp..
They are holy, they protect a big leader and they use a little magic and a little sword fighting.

Ok so maybe the magicians of fire are a litlle bit greedy. But the magicians of water where not so bad. |

well, the mages in G2 worship Innos, so i guess they are the equivalent of fire mages? |

Think of it like guys who drive car A vs. people who drive car B ... at the gas station, they are jeering at each other and thinking rude remarks. Both of them share pretty similar tastes in the German-made cars, but both of them hate each other for getting one that is slightly different in its finer details...

When I played G1 I played fighter first, and the Mage next. I still havnt learn the difference between the new classes to be honest, but I will follow the same order in G2.
