I'm new to Divine Divinity....

*sighs* I hate subject line character limits....

Any ways.

I need to know a few things before I'll be able to enjoy this game. Yes, I'm one of those anal retentive gamers that need to know how a game works before they can enjoy them. I've had this game for a few months now and have researched it's rule set since I got it, but there's one thing that I can find any info on. How many skill points will I get to play with? I know the level cap is 50 so I'll have at least 50 skill points if I max my level, but I would like to know if there's any quests that give out skill points or anything like that? I know that you can get spells from books so you don't need to spend too many skills points on spells, but I'd rather not rely on something that's random.

So how many skill points will I get to play with? I need to know so I can design a build and finally play this game.

Skill points was never a real problem with this game. In fact, by the end, I had more than I knew what to do with. Early on, yes, you need to plan and be careful, but I don't think I reached the cap and I did everything I could find to do. Just jump in and enjoy!!

LOL easier said then done, for me at least. I just finished Wizardry 8 a week ago, and before I even installed the game I had all six characters planned out. When I say planned out I mean planned out. I had every single stat/skill point planned and when I'd invest them, when I'd buy spells for my casters, etc. Sure it took me three months to plan my builds out, but in the end I had a nice solid party and had a lot of fun learning the rule set for the game.

hrmm... Sorry for the double post. Prehaps it might be easier if I listed my build for the character I want to play, then see if anyone can tell me if I'll be spreading my skill points too thin for the skills I want.

Female Survivor.
Deadly Kiss level 5
Lock Pick level 5
Pickpocket level 5
Evade Trap level 5
Elven Stamina level 5
Embrace Shadows level 5
Poison Weapon level 5
Identify level 5
Alchemy level 5
True Sight level 5
Blind level 5
Poison Skin level 5
Wisdom level 5
Magic Barrier level 5
Survivors Instinct level 5
Bow Expertise level 5
Poison Arrow level 5
Poison Damage level 5
Repair level 1
Enchant Weapon level 5
Aura of Guarding level 5
Spellshield level 5

That's 106 skill points total. Odds are there isn't enough skill points in the game for this build.

You get bonus skill points at certain levels; I think every 5, but it's been a LONG time since I played the game. However, you won't get over 100. Things like lock pick you get some freebies, and you begin with a couple of skills as well. There are a few freebies with spells, but you shouldn't need everything you've planned for. Val is actually our resident expert on the game; she wrote the walkthru, so you might either wait till she notices this thread, or PM her direct.

Alight, thanks. I'll wait and see if Val takes noticed of this thread or PM her after 48 hours has passed. I'm in no real hurry to play the game just yet, and a friend of mine has talked me into playing a game of Alpha Centauri with him. Knowing our games it's gonna be a few days before we'll finish our MP game.

Um you will have finished the game by level 30, thats with doing every last bit almost.

I dont know if 50 is the maximum level possible or more like the maximum level someone has gotten to.

So youre character wont have all of those points.

As opposed to worrying about 100 points or 50, just perhaps figure out your first 15-20 points and by the time uve put them into the character and played the game, youll know where the remaining ones go.

Well I treid your advise, the mighty stamar. It doesn't work for me - thanks anyways. I keep restating after I finish the catacombs, becuase I feel like I'm screwing up my character in some way. That's why I need to know how many skill points the game will give you. I've decided that I'm not gonna play this game until I can find out. I don't want Divine Divinity to turn into another Arcanum for me. I must have started 100 characters in Arcanum befor I got bored with it trying to find the perfect build for the character concept that I had in my mind.

I really wish developers would publish this type of info in their manuals for power-gamers like me so I can get the rule-set out of the way and actually role-play my characters. One thing I really liked about Morrowind was the fact that Bethessa Soft put in detailed info about the skill system, and which stats influenced which skills.

Some of the skills can be added for free troughout the game. Lock pick and pickpocket can both be given a free skill point, either one to both or both to lock pick. So there's at least 2 sp less. Alchemy I think, 80% sure, you can also learn for free. 3 sp less. About wisdom, It will not give you more than 1-2 free levels and faster lvl'ups, so the 3 remaining sp would be wasted if you don't care about it. 8 sp less if you don't use it. Poison damage, I see you're gonna use ranged weapons, and I think poison damage is for melee weapons only. And you alread have poison arrow. 13 sp less. Spell shield seems usefull, yes. But when you use charm you can be able to charm you're items so much that you can gain enough resistance to magical attacks without the use of spellshield, when I played I never used it much. It is most usefull in the start of the game, but in the end, you won't need it if you use the right charms in the right items. 18 sp less. Also every 4th or 5th level you get a extra sp to use. But I wouldn't rely on getting to lvl 50, more somewhere between 30-40.

Alight, thanks. I guess I'll just aim for level 35.

Oh about the poison weapon skills. I plan on using daggers and bows as my main attack weapons (bows for those times you gotta fight mages and archers so I don't have to waste time running in and melee them with my dagger). You have a good point about spellsheid and I did wonder it's usefullness when I was designing this build.

I do have one more question about Aura of Guarding I'm planning on going almost full agility (a 4:1 raito between agility and strength at each level up), my goal is to have as close to 100% evade rate for mobs at my level. In your opinion (or anyones elses for that matter) is Aura of Guarding worth keeping in my build? I was thinking it might be for those times I do get wacked.

A tip, to me it seems like you're gonna do a bit of running away and more ranged than melee. If so you should also train a bit in constitution to get your stamina up, and as you typed in the list elven stamina would be very usefull for much running away from mosters. However, some monsters will run just as fast as you, that would be some of the 'leaders' of the gangs around, human or not. Then aura of guarding would be very usefull to avoid damage. However aura of guarding, I think, is to best use for a melee specialised char, but it will always be usefull. But I would recomend using it, since mosters are quick to get to you.

If I could give a tip on wich skill you should drop, I would say identify. Troughout the game I only used one merchant, in Ars Magicana. The smith there is the only one that have unlimited money (50 000 max, but will get new 50 000 again if you go to sleep or come back next day after sold for 50 000 to him.) When you get to a favorable attitude with him he will identify items for a very small price, and money is no problem in this game. I know not all of the skills, but I might check them out later today if that could help you in your character creation. (unable to do it now)

I dont belive the game even has a use for alchemy 5, i belive that is a known bug.

I cant remember which alchemy you need to get to, 3 sounds right.

Just something off the top of my head.

I dont even know what some of those skills do actually. I have a feeling some of them are not the strongest ones, but it doesnt matter you can finish the game many ways.

Another thing i remembered is that you can get random skill books over the course of the game, so youll end up with some of skills u didnt plan out.

Assassin's Kiss level 5 - Very usefull when you use your dagger
Lock Pick level 5 - Need no more since you will get a free sp if you not avoid it. And you can also once choose between lock pick and pickpocket.
Pickpocket level 5 - same a lock pick.
Evade Trap level 5 - Could be usefull, but I would take this away if no choise left
Elven Stamina level 5 - Very usefull for ranged use
Embrace Shadows level 5 - Don't know much about the spell, exept from getting half-way invisible in shadows and night.
Poison Weapon level 5 - Poison weapon requires you to use a poison potion to use it, with a limited use. Use poison damage instead
Alchemy level 5 - Can be usefull, but could might be considered taken away, there are loads of potions to buy, and loads of money to get but the skill is good to have, might be considered if no choise left.
True Sight level 5 - As I recall only one enemy in the game ever got invisible (correct me if I'm wrong anyone) So I would not spend 5 sp in it.
Blind level 5 - Since you apparently going a lot of ranged I don't think this spell would do much for you.
Poison Skin level 5 - Again, since you aparently going for a lot of ranged, having a poisoned skill might be considered taken away.
Magic Barrier level 5 - As I said earlier you will, if you use it right get more than enough magical resistance later in the game, but it's still usefull earlier in the game.
Survivors Instinct level 5 - Haven't tried it, but I think it can be very usefull
Bow Expertise level 5 - Expertise in on type of combat is a must
Poison Arrow level 5 - Keep it
Poison Damage level 5 - If you doing most ranged, you should maybe try going down to lvl3, maybe?
Repair level 1 - One level here sounds good.
Enchant Weapon level 5 - That one I feel is a must
Aura of Guarding level 5 - I recomand using it, but it's of best use for melee specialists, warriors.

And I would like to add Elven Sight, it's very usefull for rangers. So here what I would consider of use (but hey, that's me)

Assassin's Kiss level 5
Lock Pick level 4
Pickpocket level 4
Elven Stamina level 5
Alchemy level 5
Survivors Instinct level 5
Bow Expertise level 5
Poison Arrow level 5
Poison Damage level 3
Repair level 1
Enchant Weapon level 5
Aura of Guarding level 5
Elven Sight level 5

To a total of 57. I hope I could be to any help!

Thanks. I got it all worked out.

I guess I didn't make it clear in my last few posts. My Survivor is mostly a dagger user that will use a bow as a backup weapon. You know shot at mobs as they are closing in then switch to melee to finish them off. So far it's working out better then I expected it to. So well that it's making the game way too easy, I think. I might switch to just using daggers just to give me some kind of challenge.
