What is the best armour I can get before joining a guild and how?

The best you can get (as far as I know) is Leather Armor (can combine it with the leather belt if you have NOTR for added protection). There are several ways to get it, the easiest being to buy it from Matteo (the first trader on the left side when you enter Khorinis for the first time), or from Orlan in the Dead Harpy Inn (can ask Lares to guide you there, if you don't have the addon). It costs 250 gold.

The easiest way is to steal it. Go behind Matteo's, get on the wall and jump to the roof. Drop down on the top of the other wall and walk until you can drop down into the area with chests(the place with a guard posted outside). Steal the armor and climb out the way you came in.

nah no need to buy it, the guard near matteo's store has to sleep sometimes, of course compeling him to sleep works too, the best armor before a guild is a leather armor, which is pretty crappy armor, buy a belt, two rings and an amulet, and you can get decent protection I'm in favor of focusing against one threat (weapons)
