Naming your assets.

It is quite possible to own hundreds of ships and factories in this game. How is everyone else coming to terms with keeping a tab on it all ?

I've adopted a code so I can itemise every asset and describe its function.

B=Boron S=Split A=Argon P=Paranid PR=Pirate T=Teladi
P=Personal Transport T=Transport C=Corvette F=Fighter D=Destroyer CR=Carrier TL=Large Transport S=Scout

Each factory has a code eg Solar Power Plant would be SPP1, the next one woyuld be SPP2.

So for two Argon Mercuries based out of SPP1 I would label the ships as :

AT-SPP1 Mercury1
AT-SPP1 Mercury2

I tend to give capital ships a "name" rather than a code per se. It's all very sad I know

Anyone else wish to share their sad ways

I use a similar numbering system, though I'd NEVER have 2 mercs. Manta One, Two, etc. Works for me so far. It might get more complicated when I get bigger. I'll be interested to hear what Xen does.

I name my SPPs after the zone they're in: King's Power, Herron's Power, and Hooker's Power (Red Light sector ). The ships assigned to those get names based on sector and function: KE Buyer 1, RL Seller 2. Not quite sure what I'll do if I ever put 2 factories into the same sector.

My 3 Manta roving traders have names- Manta Ray, Manta Core, Manta Beast.

Strangely, I haven't named my Nova yet.

I'm pretty similar, I guess. I use a 4-letter abbreviation (Kingdom End SPP1) and ships get a description (Kingdom End SPP1 Seller 2). My personal ships get named after ships in sci-fi books I've read - Lady Mac, Syrinx for example.

Sector and function for me. You have plenty of space to name a ship so why abbreviate?

For example:

Argon Prime SPP Sell
Argon Prime SPP Sell
Argon Prime SPP Sell
Argon Prime Crystal Buy

I'm not going to waste any effort naming traders I don't use personally. Personal ships get special names, like Last Starfighter or XHC Tidal Kraken (My Boron M2 Flagship).

Ship names don't have to be unique... you could name every ship Bob (I have no sympathy if you can't keep track if you do that). That's why all my "Selling" transports in factories are named the same. Frankly, I don't care which one is being attacked or has been destroyed... it's all the same to me: 200,000 credits down the hole.

So far I have factories in...

Argon Prime (one dead)
Kingdom's End (two dead)
Seizewell (15 dead)
Family Pride (seven dead)
Resevoir of Tranquility (hah! Lost three transports and counting)
Ocean of Paradise (two dead)
Lucky Planets (three dead)
PTNI (one dead before it even made it to the plant)
Paranid Prime (one dead)
Friar's Retreat (big mistake. Two dead, always short on crystals. Always)
Rolk's Drift (Telandarium factory. The Boron need it bad. Line up for it.)

Hmm... many more...
