Crash Problem in Orc Temple

Hey, guys -- I'm having a crash problem with Gothic.

The game crashes to desktop with an "error 2 -- missing file", error. I don't have the file name handy, but it's something like _work/data/sound/orcstaff... Interestingly, there is no /sound/ subdirectory in my _work/data directory.

The crash happens in Chapter 5, after I've killed off 3 of the Orc priests (and solved all of the other quests in the game, other than the Xardas one, which I gather is an automatic failure), every time I try to advance down a couple of paths near lava (presumably leading to the other priests). English version 1.08.

I've had no other problems with the game so far (other than Gorn deciding to attack me in the Old Mine, which I gather is a known scripting bug).

System info:
- p4 3.0, 1 gig ram, XP Home, SB Audigy (set to Miles and 4 speakers), ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I also did not use the default install directory (anyone else have a problem with that?), but instead used a "games" directory off my c: drive.

Welcome to the RPGDot forum!

You could try the following things:
-Install patch 1.08k. It updates the Miles Sound System.
-Disable sound until you´re past that area. (Exit the game for the sound changes to take effect.)
-Create an empty file where Gothic wants it.
-Uninstall & reinstall, and pray the uninstaller removes all the junk from the registry. (I would save this one until you´re really desparate.)
-Disable audio and set viewing distance, etc. to absolute minimum. Maybe the file is now no longer required.
-Bypass this part. Find out which shaman is missing, insert his sword(s) or even himself to kill and loot and move on to chapter 6. Depending on where exactly you are it´s possible you don´t have to visit this area again.

Both correct.

Thanks, Gorath - for the greeting and the tips.

I managed to work through the problem -- in the event anyone else encounters this problem, the specific error message I encountered was:

B:VFILE:Err:-2:can't find file:_work\data\sound\ITRW_24_orcstaff01.MRM code:255

I believe it was being triggered by a problem in pulling up the appropriate file whenever the game was trying to display the last two shamans (I encountered the problem in other situations a couple of times, with a different file reference, but it was always resolved by reloading, so it's probably a SB Audigy2 driver issue). In any event, I managed to resolve it for both Shamans (initially accidentally), by slowly advancing into the rooms and just stopping, prior to moving into the place where it previously crashed -- giving the game additional time to catch up on loading, rather than rapidly advancing, resolved the problem.

Got though the problem and finished the rest of the game - thanks again for your help. See you in the Gothic 2 forums!

I'm having this exact same crash problem. Specifically, it's crashing right as I hit the 'black' switch just after the second skeleton mage to open the columns. As soon as the camera switches angles and it starts to lift the column blocking the hall, it crashes.

Very frustrating. I tried switching sound providers, but its still not working. Any suggestions? I really want to finish this and move on to Gothic 2

SB Audigy, latest drivers, blah blah.
