Leaves Eyes - Lovelorn

Another day, another powerful Norwegian gothic beauty/beast band. This one is far more emphasis on the beauty, Liv Kristine from Theatre of Tragedy's ex-beauty aspect is really put in the spotlight here. And guess what? She learned to sing, and quite well at that, she's far more refined here than her often nasal-delivery on ToT's first couple offerings. The band is very tight and heavy, also far more refined in general than ToT, and far more decidedly "metal".

If you like Nightwish, but wish yourself that they'd "crank it up" a little more, or if youre leery of the beast-aspect of B&B metal, than this cd might be what youre looking for, since beast-man seems to only be a part-time employee of this particular franchise. The comparison to Nightwish is inescapable, but they are markedly different, for Tarja of Nightwish is markedly more operatic. Liv isnt, she has a nice voice, but she's far more conventional in her stylings. If beast-man and Madame Butterfly are a little too much for you to swallow, yet youre looking for some good femme-fronted metal, you might like this.

Sammy, you ought to think about a career in short reviews. You do such an excellent job with the comparisons and contrasts. It's unfortunate that I simply can't get into your style o' choice.

Trail of Tears - Free Fall Into Fear

The more I look back, the more I think I should have either been a cartographer or a court stenographer

Typing is fun!
No really, its always been sort of a winding-down at the end of the day thing for me. Plus, I like talking about obscure music. I end up getting in conversations all the time with almost random people regarding music. Someone says "hey, nice shirt, that band is great!", and I launch into "well, if you think this band is good, then youve gotta hear..".

A half hour later theyre like "Uh, I gotta go man.." ='.'=

Battlelore - Swords Song

I was in looking thru some used cds, and just randomly picked this up. Im really in the mood for a new totally bombastic type of sword & sworcery "battle metal" type band. A thundering voice proclaims something along the lines of "though this day we may die, our legend shall live FOREVER!" Drums kick in, guitars grind, trumpets blare, etc. It's just an exhilirating form of music.

You know, the kinda stuff that makes other people laugh, but makes you want to put a soup pot on your head, rip a leg off your table, and crash thru the drywall and conquer your neighbor. Again. Theyre getting sick of it by now ='.'=

So lo and behold a light shineth down and I pick up "Battlelore", I mean, how much clearer can it be? I mean, just look at it!

I asked the neanderthal working the counter about it, and he replied "its Lord of the Rings metal, man. No, literally Balrogs and orcs and crap like that... corny as hell."
And the problem with corny is???
Certainly better than Satan and Beelzebub and all that redundant crap.

5 minutes later I was full-on enjoying the hell outta this cd on the way home.
There are a few different vocalists, and all kinds of diff styles present here, but all on the light and heavy metal side, with occasional blast beats. Theyre like D&D/Tolkien medievel-flavored metal, flutes and stuff now and then. Although I wanted pure battle, and while this definitely has some good battle tracks, its no Bal Sagoth cd or somthing. But it's a fun fantasy-themed cd

Just look at em! You gotta love it! LOL

No really, they just seem to have that sort of altruistic spirit I really appreciate in music. Like I said, it's just fun music to listen to

Heres their official mp3 sample page

Heres two of their music videos. The second one down "Journey to Undying Lands " is absolutely great, almost brought a tear to my jaded eye!

Yeah, my co-worker here is laughing his ass off. This coming from a guy who scarfs up as much "reality" tv and rap metal as he can.

Screw him, he's not worthy of Battlelore! Go back to listening to Limp Biskit!

Look, they even got some little D&D style minis!

too bad it aint in english
