real time actions. I like it in games like gothic that if you wil survive the fight and you are equally matched that It only depends of yourself and your reactions _________________ Want to become a vampire? a warrior in the battle between vampires and werewolves?

I don't mind both actually, but given 1 choice I prefer to go for active battle.

Both have their place. I like both when they're done right. Personally, I find RPGs most immersive when they're 1st-person and all realtime, and I don't really care for the BG-style hybrid of realtime/turn-based. Having said that, Planescape:Torment is one of my favourites. So I'd say execution is key. |

Yes, this seems to be the right answer. I really enjoyed Gothic I & II, but I believe you can't make battles turn-based in these games. However Wizardry 8 with its turn-based battles was very good game. And changing battles from turn-based to action-based would ruin it. |

I'm not a big fan of the Might & Magic series, but there are some features of the design that struck me as really good ideas. One is representing the party in a kind of abstract way by having a single 1st-person view for all your characters - kinda like Dungeon Master, I guess, but it feels quite different in a free-moving FP game. Another is the ability to switch between RT and TB on a whim. In the M&M games I played it wasn't executed particularly well, but I think it's a great touch in principle - it should allow you to breeze through encounters that your characters are experienced enough to handle easily, while requiring the extra efficiency and focus that comes from switching to TB for major battles. I agree that most RPGs wouldn't work like that, but a game designed with both styles of play in mind could acheive some interesting (and unique) results.
I believe XCOM: Apocalypse had a choice of TB or RT play, but I never played that instalment. |

Yes, good-looking principle, but every game I played with both RT and TB was good in one and bad in other one (or bad in both :]).
I suppose they base the gameplay on one of them and add the other in the end. |

Nope, he meant M&M. You can fight battles without going into turn-based mode. Generally, real time combat is only useful for ranged attacks on a critter that can't move into melee range. Maybe when the wandering monsters in the starting regions have regenerated and your now-upper-level party returns... _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Yeah, flying above a bunch of baddies and shoot a gazzilion arrows into the herd in RT mode is a very fond memory of mine
However, RT was (for me at least) only for really lopsided encounters, or (as you said dte) ranged combat where you had a lot of room to back peddle ... especially when using the ray guns in MM6 ... oh THAT was fun!
