At first I hated MW because people claimed it was better than Gothic. But, after a while I gave it another shot and thought it was a pretty good game. I loved how huge the world was, it felt like you actually had to travel to get places rather than going for a two minute jog as is the case with most games. I still think the monsters are annoying and the fighting is rather boring but overall it's a fun game. I didn't ever finish it though. I hadn't even started on the main story when my character had reached the level limit and the story wasn't interesting enough by itself to keep me going. _________________ If soot stains your tunic, dye it black. @Chekote - Unnacceptable is a strong term to use. I would suggest that you don't like it ... in fact I'll go out on a limb and suggest that a number of people don't like it. But many do. That is the main source of disagreement about MW.
I personally like the sand box approach ... at times. Other times I don't. When I don't I play something else!
Here's my favorite example of what I would like to see in a CRPG:
Early in my adventures I develop a grudge against a particular town - why is un important. Many years later to get revenge I set up an import/export business in the town and (at cost to myself) put the local business out of business. Farms, blacksmiths, bakers, as many as I can effect. Then, when the town is as dependent on me as I can possibly arrange it, close up shop and stop selling. Instant economic disaster. In real life there'd be riots etc. followed by starvation and mass migrations out. With any luck there'd be a ghost town in few years.
Now THAT is what I call revenge - with no blood shed .. at least no directly.
@Val - if you read this, does that qualify me for membership in the evil doers guild? *grin* _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

My feelings on MW are very similar to Chekote's. In response to Lintra, I think the difference between a great sandbox game (perhaps X2?) and a lousy sandbox game (MW) comes down to expectations generated by the publisher.
MW was advertised as a great RPG with a compelling story. Reality (for me, at least) is that I wasn't compelled to do anything in MW. The story didn't compel me to do anything. Character development didn't compel me to do anything. "The Better Widget Hunt" didn't compel me to do anything. The game progressed practically identical whether you did the story or sat in a swamp and killed rats for a week straight.
X2 never trumpeted a compelling story so nobody was surprised when the story proved to be incidental to the empire-building.
As for the original topic, I need a little help here. In the mid 90's (IIRC), there was a 4x TB strategy game that was supposed to be "Civ in space". This was probably a short time before Alpha Centauri came out. I can see the artwork on the CD case so clearly (red border, lots of blue in the bubble city), but I can't for the life of me think of the name. While the game was supposedly decent in multiplayer (this was VERY early in the MP movement), it was completely awful in single player. Anyone remember the name of that dog?
Edith: HA! "Deadlock". What a POS. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

@dte - Yeah, I had a line in my last post about that, but took it out. We should all be able to ignore hype by now. Some of the most highly hyped games have bombed, and I mean really bombed, in recent years, PoR2 and Dikatana come to mind ... battle cruiser 3000 (or what ever).
The problem comes from being billed as 'the game to end all games'. Obviously no game is going to appeal to everyone equally. Some of us like shooters, some like turnbased party stuff. Some like wide open story-less worlds, while others like the very linear stuff.
Heck, let me restate that ... No game is going to apeal to everyone all the time. Sometimes *I* like shooters, sometimes I want a turnbased party combat system. Sometimes I want a sandbox and at others I want a structured story with limited freedom.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I am almost embarassed over the number of high quality games I have installed on my PC. From Gothic to NWN, From Civ3 to MW, Gal Civ, Medieval Total War, X2, Freelancer, Gothic 2, ToEE, Dungeon Seige (*wince*), Battlefield 1942, Arcanum, Heroes of M&M 3, Master of Orion, M&M 6&7, Diablo II, Wiz 7 ... and many others. There is so much replay time from just those games alone, that I have trouble justifying buying a new one. Heck I haven't even gotten the time together to finish Wiz 7 ... and I WANT to!!
And then there are the mods out there for many of these games.
Nope. I am happy that I have a game to fit almost any mood.
Edited: Removed a stray "I". Dunno how it escaped, but it is back where it belongs now. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

@dte: Deadlock? Oh. I thought you meant Spaceward Ho.
I'm with Lintra on this one, you can't please everyone... I'm perfectly satisfied when *I* like a game. Nobody else needs to like it.
...I'm still playing MW, loved it from the beginning. Played it when it came out which was in... May... 02? and I'm still having fun with interior decoration, so this makes it the game I played over the the longest stretch of time (as opposed to the one I replayed the most often), right after Daggerfall.
It took me 7 months to come to an end with Daggerfall back when it came out, without being able to finish the main quest because of a bug. Last year I gave it another try, and I this time I made it through to the end in about two weeks, no trigger bug this time.
As for (IMO) really horrible games, I have yet to see a real CRPG stinker. As I said, none of those I mentioned got the 'horrible' award, even if I didn't like them. _________________ Jaz |

Morrowind is the ultimate excercise of gaming boredom. Oh, and I don't know what X-danger is smoking, but he's just writing off a bunch of great games as "bad games." _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

Why do you say that? After all, it only got GAME OF THE YEAR FOR TWO WHOLE YEARS!!!! Okay..... *sigh* ...... I'm calm.
No, Half-Life's single-player game was phenominal. Sure, it could have used a little more variety in the NPC's you met, but it was the most interactive and immersive FPS to date, IMO.
Do you say that 'cause you've played Half-Life and found something better, or you just don't like FPS? _________________ I hear they bake yummy cakes in China |
