Paladin rune problem

I'm sure this is a seriously newb problem but I just got my first rune (arrow 150 damage) but it doesn't do any damage. I paid 5 lp and everything looks good; it flies to the target like other spells but no damage even against a lizard. I went back to see if I missed something to activate it but didn't see anything. Did I miss something?

The hint is in the name of the rune....HOLY arrow.........is damages unholy foes......and is quite powerful against the correct enemy....too powerful IMHO.

It's very very very efficient against orcs, I think.
