Weapon Breaking ...
   

If we can learn a special ability to break enemy's weapon with our swords by some chance during a fight, and the same thing happens to our enemies(those who have this ability), then fighting will become more exciting!!

The better sword we are holding in hand, the higher breaking chance we got. (Especially those magical ones... )

Can you imagine how extremely frustrating it is to fight a couple of orcs and that one Orc Elite breaks you're just bought "Way-too-awesome-orc-killing-sword" and you have to switch to a lesser weapon (let's hope they implent some kind of hotkey for switching swords, so you don't have to open your inventory.)

@Sem:

... only those enemies who know how to break weapons got some chance(also at a low level) to destroy our swords. Even, perhaps not every Orc Elite knows how to do that, pal...

Besides our/enemies's breaking skill, there is another factor that effects the breaking chance:

The better our sword is, the harder it is to break it;
The better our sword is, the easier it is to break enemy's weapon;

It is of great fun to become a master of sword breaking(say, max=10~15%).

I'd like to see item degrading over time with use, aswell as certain things like swordbreakers on shields that wear down a weapon/might cause it to break if hit enough. The edges of shields could be sharpened for wearing both weapons down and your enemy if they are too close

As far as swords versus swords, it's very easy to chip/fracture a sword if you're dumb enough to parry with the edge....instead of the width of the blade.

Weapons made of magic ore cannot break. They say so in Gothic 1, just speak to Ian at the Old Mine about the magic ore. I suppose bad weapons could break, but I strongly doubt you'll ever face an Orc Elite with a crappy weapon, hehe.

Additional factor:

The more skillful you are as sword breaker, the harder it is for your enemy to break your sword...

As a master of sword breaking, it's nearly impossible to break your (fine)weapon.

no thanks , and i hate when weapons dull and break and you gotta repair them every 5 mins its lame.

specially when you find a good weapon and it breaks no thanks.

five minutes is way too harsh, and that adds depth to the game imo.

I don't like buying a new sword and having it break after 10 minutes either, but having your equipment both VISUALLY and physically wear down imo would add a certain flavor/depth to the gritty nature of the Gothic series, espically give more reason for forging/crafting and all of that.

Summarization


The factors that affect the breaking chance are:

1. Breaking Skill; 2. Sword Quality; 3. Strength; 4. Dexterity;


As a master of sword breaking with a excellent(but not magical ones) sword, the chance of breaking your sword in case you are fighting another sword breaking master with another excellent sword, is less than 1/1000, that will be enough, then.


Here are some examples:

Signs:

1.Breaking Skill Class (BSC):
GM-Great Master; M-Master;
E-Excellent; G-Good;
N-Normal; NsB-Not so Bad;
R-Rookie; CKN-Completely Know Nothing;

2.Sword Quality Class (SQC):
MS-Magical Sword; OMS-Ore made Sword(Normal sword);
ES-Excellent Sword; ROMS-Rough Ore made Sword;
FS-Fine Sword; NS-Normal Sword;
RS1-Rough Sword; RS2-Rusty Sword;

S'sBC-Sword's Breaking Chance;

I use the follow format:

(Hero BSC/Enemy BSC; Hero SQC/Enemy SQC; Hero S'sBC/Enemy S'sBC)
with Normal Strength & Dexterity;

There are 4096 descriptions in total, so only some concept-ones are respresented here.

hm... This is interesting. BUt what abautthe durability? Once our sword just break? When the battle start it is fine but at th end it has broken? And what abaut the shields? Can we repair items or sth.?
((i think this is a good idea to break swords but i think the repairing and the durability is the same important. ))

Sorry, I just don't like the idea. Maybe disarm is a bit more normal.
There is such a small chance that you can actually break someones weapon.

The only way I could agree with sword breakage is if it was maintainence based....IE, if you used your sword in several heavy battles without finding a smithy to sharpen it for you for a little gold, (or you could learn the sharpening skill for a few LP).....it could then break.

Having the sword take a small hit in it's "health" each time you hit something makes perfect sense. So as you use the sword it becomes less and less sharp, which means it becomes less effective. If you totally neglect your sword, then breakage would also be reasonable.

If you have ever used an axe in real life, you know how dull they can become with use......and how much better they perform when newly sharpened.

... What are we discussing here? You even made a way to calculate it.. What-if posts will change nothing I guess, this isn't our job here to discuss something surely not valid.. At least, I think so

Umm, dude.......this is a DISCUSSION forum. That Is why it says "General and spoilerless (!) discussions about the second sequel to one of the best CRPGs" in the forum heading.

There have been countless speculation and "I wish...." threads about G3. This is no different. Just people talking to stave off the boredom while we wait for the game. And you are wrong about "What-if" posts not changing anything. The devs have publicly stated they read the forums and discuss ideas they find.....some of which have made it into the game.

Yea well, I think trying the 'Wish list' thread would be a better idea. And for this cause anyway, I really don't think a sword can break another one.. So I have not to agree.. (Unless one sword was rusty, maybe)
