The chests are locked, and the 'journal' sounds like I need to steal from him...
If I am supposed to use lockpicks please tell me how the hell I am supposed to use them... yes I am new. Thx.

action + left/right (or strafe left/strafe right). you need to find out the correct combination like lrrll. be sure to bring enough lockpicks with you if you did not take any advice in picking locks because you will break your lockpick in 90% of the times if you try a wrong combination.
