Gothic 2 - Troubleshooting FAQ v0.5
Welcome to the RPGDot/GothicDot Gothic 2 - Troubleshooting FAQ. This is a list of solutions and recommendations for standard problems.
Please note that the things mentioned in this document are strictly unofficial and in no way supported by Piranha Bytes and JoWooD. Use these infos at your own risk!
Installation
Mislabelled CDs
The installation program wants to see the CDs in the following order: (tbc)
I canīt install from Toshiba SD-R 1202
Make sure you have the latest firmware for this DVD/CD-RW combo.
Start up
The first start takes minutes...
... and the task manager says Gothic II doesnīt respond.
-->Wait!
The first start after a crash takes minutes...
... and the task manager says Gothic II doesnīt respond.
-->Wait!
Every start takes minutes...
... and the task manager says Gothic II doesnīt respond. This is a bug. Gothic 2 builds an index of more than 25.000 files in the two cases mentioned above. If this happens every time you should replace [GOTHIC2]\System\Vdfs32e.exe with this updated version. If the problem isnīt solved move the file to another location.
Graphics
Recommended drivers and configurations:- DirectX: DirectX9 sometimes causes random problems. Go back to DirectX8 if necessary.
- color depth: Set your desktop to 32 bit color depth.
- GeForce: Detonator 44.03. If you run into trouble go back to 32.80.
- Radeon: Catalyst 3.5 or later. Set radeonHackAmbientColBug=0 in the gothic.ini.
- Voodoo5: doesnīt matter but enable 2xFSAA
I canīt see the videos [with enabled AA]
This is a known Bink Video problem. Disable FSAA in your driver options. Many drivers default to enabled FSAA. Other FSAA options are also worth a try, maybe one of them works.
Anti Aliasing doesnīt work
Depending on your graphics card and driver revision you might be able to make it work. Be sure you edit the gothic.ini entries to accept the driverīs AA & AF configuration. Try different AA & AF settings, with a bit of luck some of them will work.
Radeon users should have less AA problems than GeForce users if Cat.3.5 is used (according to latest forum reports).
Objects in the distance are flickering
Set zForceZBuffer=1; in the gothic.ini.
The flashing polys in the distant are a result of driver-misinterpreted depth information while using a w-buffer.
If you use a z Buffer, those probs are gone, but you are loosing some precision near the camera (which probably never anyone will notice).
Other hardware
How to (de)activate joystick or gamepad?
Configure the following gothic.ini entry according to your needs:
enableJoystick=0;
... enables joystick support in gothic (default: 1) set to 0 if you encounter problems (rapid fire etc.)
Disable it if you donīt need it.
I cannot configure the 'Y' key
Due to a typo in the implementation of the US-international keyboard layout into the game the 'Y' key canīt be configured in the options. 'Y' and 'Z' are exchanged on a German keyboard. Known workarounds:
(1)Change to German keyboard layout, configure, change back.
(2)Manually assign the key in the gothic.ini. Find the desired command and set it to '1500' for 'Y' or '2C00' for 'Z'. The options will still display the wrong keys but it should work correctly.
'Failed to initialise sound, MSS reported: ...'
'... broken wave out driver- 'buffer done' flag never set' followed by an 'error no. 121'.
--> Make sure 'Total Recorder' is not installed. Then run DXDiag.exe, go to the sound tab and change the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider. Start at 'Full', work your way down if necessary.
'... waveOut open () failed"
--> The 2 known solutions are:
(1) 'Total Recorder' changes your standard wave audio device. Uninstall Total Recorder or check your windows control panel to make sure your sound card is the standard wave out device.
(2) Run DXDiag.exe, go to the sound tab and change the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider. Start at 'Full', work your way down if necessary.
Known incompatibilities
To avoid startup problems, random crashes and corrupted savegames please deactivate all programs running in the background. Take this seriously; use your task manager and close all other programs.
Total Recorder installed
Check if this tool is on your PC if Gothic 2 refuses to start and delivers a sound related error message.
All virus scanners
Random crashes, corrupted saves.
Zonealarm plus open internet connection
Random crashes, corrupted saves.
Known bugs
City map becomes world map
This is a bug in the inventory archiver that was introduced in the English version.
The city map is always converted on using the map hotkey 'M' if the world map is not in the inventory, so make sure you have them both.
You can insert the missing pieces in devmode:
- B, "marvin", B (replace B with the kay assigned to the character screen)
- F2, "insert [item_name]", ENTER, F2
- B, "42", B (be patient - it takes a while)
In this case the [item_name] is ItWr_Map_NewWorld_City or ItWr_Map_NewWorld.
Suggested procedure is: drop the converted map and insert both maps mentioned above.
Here are insert codes for all other maps, just in case:
itwr_map_caves_mis - the caves of Khorinis
itwr_map_oldworld - valley of mines
itwr_map_oldworld_oremines_mis - Garondīs mine map
itwr_map_orcelite_mis - Orc war map
itwr_map_shrine_mis - the holy shrines
itwr_seamap_irdorath - sea map to the Isle of Irdorath
itwr_shatteredgolem_mis - very old map
The [...] dragon does not attack [spoiler!]
Under some circumstances (reason not known yet) a dragon-dialog might be unexpectedly terminated due to an missing END option.
The following things would happen on END:
- Innos Eye gets unloaded
- the dragon becomes vulnerable
Killing the dragon is not necessary. You can return to the castle and continue the game. The quest is marked as solved.
If you want the xp use the following workaround:
(step 1) Talk to the dragon. He dragon should do nothing now because you still wear the loaded Innos Eye. Don't attack him - he's invulnerable
(step 2) Activate DevMode:
(open the stat screen (B), type 'MARVIN', close the stat screen (B), open the console with F2)
(step 3) Make the dragon vulnerable
(focus the dragon and enter 'edit focus' in the console, in the new console enter 'flags = 0', close the console with F2)
(step 4) Run out of the dragon's fight/sight range
(step 5) Drop the loaded Innos Eye
(select the item in the inventory and drop it to the ground with the jump key (left ALT))
(step 6) Insert the unloaded Innos Eye and take it
(enter 'insert itmi_innoseye_discharged_mis' in the console and hit return - it's now in front of the player, grab it)
(step 7) Deactivate DevMode
(open stat screen (B), type '42', close stat screen (B) - be patient it takes a while)
Happy dragon-slaying!
Iīm stuck in ...
... water, etc.
-->press [Ctrl+Alt+F8]
Some text is in still in German
Has to be patched.
The subtitles still include instructions for the actors
Has to be patched.
A few dialogs in the valley of mines are obviously wrong
Has to be patched.
I canīt wear 2 rings ...
... after Iīve taken them off for the first time.
-->Unequip everything.
Iīm stuck in a dialog
If the game doesnīt offer an 'End dialog' option and you canīt get out while life continues in the background you are in serious trouble.
Use [Shift+Esc] to exit the game. Nothing else! Save/load in the menu or killing the Gothic 2 with [Ctrl+Alt+Del] might result in a broken savegame.
Misc.
How to activate the internal frame counter?
Type B, FRATE , B (replace B with the kay assigned to the character screen). The frame rate should be displayed in the upper left corner.
Internal cache settings in the gothic.ini
If you have a lot of RAM you can try to tweak the game a bit by assigning larger caches in the gothic.ini. This is only for advanced users. Better backup the ini before you start. The entries and their purpose:- zTexCacheOutTimeMSec=240000; time in milliseconds an texture is cached (240000 = 4min)
- zTexCacheSizeMaxBytes=32000000; size of texture cache in bytes (32000000 = ~30MB)
- zSndCacheOutTimeMSec=10000; time in milliseconds an sound is cached (10000 = 10sec)
- zSndCacheSizeMaxBytes=20000000; size of sound cache in bytes (20000000 = ~19MB)
Viewing distance shortcuts
You can change the viewing distance on the fly with F1 - F4.

Gothic 2 - Troubleshooting FAQ v0.5
Welcome to the RPGDot/GothicDot Gothic 2 and Night of the Raven - Troubleshooting FAQ. This is a list of solutions and recommendations for standard problems.
Please note that the things mentioned in this document are strictly unofficial and in no way supported by Piranha Bytes and JoWooD.
Use these infos at your own risk!
Installation
Mislabelled CDs
The installation program wants to see the CDs in the following order: Play CD - Install CD1 - Install CD2 - (Play CD)
I can't install from Toshiba SD-R 1202
Make sure you have the latest firmware for this DVD/CD-RW combo.
Computer restarts during installation process
Some onboard soundcards, among others the ones made by C-media, seem to cause this problem. Disable the soundcard and try installing again.
Can't detect (Addon) CD or "bitte legen sie Original cd (Nacht des Raben) in"-error
(1) Windows XP Service Pack 2 causes this problem most of the times. Try uninstalling it.
(2) If you have USB Compact Flash or other USB SD-Devices installed for reading info from a digital camera, deactive (not deinstall) them.
Game won't install ...
... and the task manager says autorun doesn't respond.
--> Wait!
I/O-error during installation
"An I/0 error ....... It is normally caused by bad media install or corrupted file"
One or more files on the installation CD is corrupted. Return the bad CD to the shop and get a new one.
Start up
The first start takes minutes...
... and the task manager says Gothic II doesn't respond.
--> Wait!
The first start after a crash takes minutes...
... and the task manager says Gothic II doesn't respond.
--> Wait!
Every start takes minutes...
... and the task manager says Gothic II doesn't respond.
This is a bug. Gothic 2 builds an index of more than 25.000 files in the two cases mentioned above. If this happens every time you should replace [GOTHIC2]\System\Vdfs32e.exe with this updated version. If the problem isn't solved move the file to another location.
This seems to be caused by older Windows versions too (Windows 98 for example). XP for example doesn't have any problems indexing the files.
Games doesn't start, although first start-up went fine.
Something must have changed between the first and second start. Check for any virusses or spyware, this is typical virus and spyware behaviour. Install a virus scanner, AdAware and Spybot, all with the latest definitions.
Night of the Raven crashes while loading...
U:PAR: Class - size not compatible : C_ITEM
CPP - size : 524
Script - size : 504
This error occurs when you try to install NotR (german) on Gothic 2 with a different language version. You need to change the .exe file.
Graphics and Video cards
Recommended drivers and configurations:- DirectX: DirectX9 sometimes causes random problems. Go back to DirectX8 if necessary.
- color depth: Set your desktop to 32 bit color depth.
- GeForce: Detonator 44.03. If you run into trouble go back to 32.80.
- Radeon: Catalyst 3.5 or later. Set radeonHackAmbientColBug=0 in the GOTHIC.INI.
- Voodoo5: doesnīt matter but enable 2xFSAA
I can't see the videos [with enabled AA]
This is a known Bink Video problem. Disable FSAA in your driver options. Many drivers default to enabled FSAA. Other FSAA options are also worth a try, maybe one of them works.
(Full Scene) Anti Aliasing doesn't work
Depending on your graphics card and driver revision you might be able to make it work.
It also seem that using 4x AA gives less problems than 2x.
If zVidEnableAntiAliasing is enabled in GOTHIC.INI the engine enables anti aliasing (sort-independend) by render state. This only works if you don't force FSAA in your gfx driver.
It's recommended to leave zVidEnableAntiAliasing disabled and to configure FSAA in the display control panel of your video card.
Objects in the distance are flickering
possible solutions:
(1) Set zForceZBuffer=1 in the GOTHIC.INI.
The flashing polys in the distant are a result of driver-misinterpreted depth information while using a W-buffer. If you use a Z-Buffer, those probs are gone, but you are loosing some precision near the camera (which probably never anyone will notice).
(2) Set geforce3HackWBufferBug=1 in the GOTHIC.INI
(3) For Radeon users: Change radeonHackAmbientColBug=0 and/or zSyncAmbientCol=0 to 1 (This is no longer needed since Catalyst 3.4)
The sky is flickering
Set zSkyRenderFirst=1 in the GOTHIC.INI (the hotfix for NotR does this automatically) In some cases this also works to solve problems with flickering objects.
Several combination of zForceZBuffer=0/1, geforce3HackWBufferBug=0/1 and zSkyRenderFirst=0/1 seem to solve the problems with flickering objects and/or sky. It differs per system. Try some different settings and see what works best.
Textures are flickering with Geforce 6800 and Geforce 4
Download the 76.41 forceware drivers or higher.
Objects in my inventory are displayed wrong/strange.
Try adjusting ZinventoryItemsDistanceScale=1.3 in the GOTHIC.INI.
Gothic 2 won't start: "X:XD3D_InitPerDx: Can't create D3DX context! Error: DDERR_UNSUPPORTED"
The driver can't switch to full screen in certain resolutions. The exact reason is unknown, it seems to happen on random driver / card / DirectX / windows combinations.
Four possible solutions:
(1) The usual workaround:
Set your desktop to a 32bit resolution, edit the GOTHIC.INI to match it, change zVidResFullscreenBPP=16 to 32. Repeat with all normal resolutions if necessary.
(2) Activate “Enable table fog emulation” in the graphics driver options.
(3) Try another driver. Installing an older version might work.
(4) on older ATI cards:
a) Uninstall graphics driver including remainings.
b) Uninstall DirectX with a special tool. Reboot.
c) Install DirectX8.1 from the G2 CD
d) Install Cat3.9
Game stutters with my Radeon card
Turn on W-buffer support in your video card settings. The game prefers W-buffering because of the great distances.
It can however cause problems with drivers and other games, because almost all other games use Z-buffering.
The game keeps resetting the resolution to 800x600
(1) Press [ENTER] in the options menu to confirm the change.
(2) Don't use any wide-screen resolutions, Gothic doesn't seem to support these. Use regular resolutions like 1024x768, 1280x1024 or 1600x1280 (all with a length/width ratio of 1.25)
When changing the resolution I get a DXD3D error
Change back to DirectX8. Gothic 2 is pretty old already and has troubles with newer versions of DirectX.
Other hardware
How to (de)activate joystick or gamepad?
Configure the following GOTHIC.INI entry according to your needs:
enableJoystick=0;
... enables joystick support in gothic (default: 1) set to 0 if you encounter problems (rapid fire etc.)
Disable it if you don’t need it.
I cannot configure the "Y"-key
Due to a typo in the implementation of the US-international keyboard layout into the game the "Y"-key can't be configured in the options. "Y" and "Z" are exchanged on a German keyboard. Known workarounds:
(1) Change to German keyboard layout, configure, change back.
(2) Manually assign the key in the gothic.ini. Find the desired command and set it to "1500" for "Y" or "2C00" for "Z". The options will still display the wrong keys but it should work correctly.
"Failed to initialise sound, MSS reported: ..."
"... broken wave out driver- 'buffer done' flag never set' followed by an 'error no. 121' "
--> Make sure "Total Recorder" is not installed. Then run DXDiag.exe, go to the sound tab and change the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider. Start at "Full", work your way down if necessary.
"... waveOut open () failed"
--> The 2 known solutions are:
(1) "Total Recorder" changes your standard wave audio device. Uninstall Total Recorder or check your windows control panel to make sure your sound card is the standard wave out device.
(2) Run DXDiag.exe, go to the sound tab and change the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider. Start at "Full", work your way down if necessary.
Game crashes and "ACCESS VIOLATIONS" with NVidia chipset
Almost all NVidia NForce2 chipset have the onboard soundchip ALC650 from realtek with the ac97 codec. Deinstalling the NVidia driver and installing realtek drivers doesn't completely solve the problem, but makes a big difference nonetheless.
To remove only the driver for the soundcard and not the whole NForce chipset, go to System/Sound and Audio devices/Hardware.
Game "lags" ...
... the world including enemies has a normal framerate , but the character lags, like in a network lag.
--> See if you have the "TV out" enabled on your video card. ("Clone Screen" instead of "Single Screen"), disable it when playing Gothic 2.
Savegames
While loading a savegame the game gives a error with "ACCESS VIOLATION ... missing files"
Possible solutions:
(1) Reload another savegame first. While in this game load the savegame that gave the error message. The system should be finding the missing file and load properly.
(2) Load the savegame with all visibility properties lowered to 20%, if it loads properly save the game on the same slot. Now you should be able to increase the visibilty of objects and textures again without any errors.
(3) If 1 and 2 don't work: create a 0 byte file (use notepad for example) and rename it to whatever filename the game says is missing. Then put it in the directory (if it doesnt exist, create it) which also is stated in the error message.
(4) This is patched with the 2.6 patch for Night of the Raven.
"B: VFILE: Err: -2: Can't find file: _WORK\DATA\ANIMS\_COMPILED\[itemname].MRM Code: 255"
See above: "ACCESS VIOLATION ... missing files"
After saving and quitting I get an "ACCESS DENIED" error
Shut down all running virus scanners.
"ACCESS VIOLATION" when loading a savegame
Save a working savegame over the savegame that gives the errors. During the last save something has gone wrong when saving the world, with the result that the savegame became corrupted. If the error message says "...missing files" see above.
Crash when entering a new world.
The savegame for that particular map became corrupted. Go to the "Saves"-folder and replace the file for the map with one from an older game.
Here are the names from the savegames with their corresponding in-game names:
NEWWORLD.SAV = Khorinis
OLDWORLD.SAV = Valley of Mines
ADDONWORLD.SAV = Jharkendar (NotR)
DRAGONISLAND.SAV = Irdorath
This map will probably not recognise your character as the PC_HERO, but as a regular NPC, see the post "Missing dialogs when using interactive objects" in this FAQ to solve this.
After loading a savegame I have a gazillion items in my inventory
Your savegame is corrupt. Load an older savegame and overwrite the corrupted save.
Can I use my old saves for Night of the Raven?
No, saves from Gothic 2 are not compatible with Night of the Raven. With Night of the Raven the game is different from the very start of the game and the world changes too much with it.
Computer crashed while saving. Savegames are gone?
If they are not gone they are most likely corrupt. Check the "Saves"-folder and see whether or not the savegames have at least these files:
SAVEDAT.SAV
SAVEHDR.SAV
SAVEINFO.SAV
THUMB.SAV
and one or more *WORLD.SAV according to the worlds you have visited.
If some of these files are missing the savegame is useless.

SATA Raid setup
Gives copy protection issues. You can contact "CP-Support" on the Jowood Forums (it's a username, not a forum) and leave him a personal message. Always send him a zipped DXDiag and MSConfig. There's no guarantee that he can help though.
Known bugs
City map becomes world map
This is a bug in the inventory archiver that was introduced in the English version.
The city map is always converted on using the map hotkey "M" if the world map is not in the inventory, so make sure you have them both.
You can insert the missing pieces in DevMode:
- (B), "marvin", (B) (replace (B) with the kay assigned to the character screen)
- [F2], "insert [item_name]", [Enter], [F2]
- (B), "42", (B) (be patient - it takes a while)
In this case the [item_name] is ItWr_Map_NewWorld_City or ItWr_Map_NewWorld.
Suggested procedure is: drop the converted map and insert both maps mentioned above.
Here are insert codes for all other maps, just in case:
itwr_map_caves_mis - the caves of Khorinis
itwr_map_oldworld - valley of mines
itwr_map_oldworld_oremines_mis - Garondīs mine map
itwr_map_orcelite_mis - Orc war map
itwr_map_shrine_mis - the holy shrines
itwr_seamap_irdorath - sea map to the Isle of Irdorath
itwr_shatteredgolem_mis - very old map
I transformed into an animal, but I can't turn back!
press [Enter]
The [...] dragon does not attack [spoiler!]
Under some circumstances (reason not known yet) a dragon-dialog might be unexpectedly terminated due to an missing END-option.
(open the stat screen (B), type "marvin", close the stat screen (B), open the console with [F2])
(step 3) Make the dragon vulnerable
(focus the dragon and enter "edit focus" in the console, in the new console enter "flags = 0", close the console with [F2])
(step 4) Run out of the dragon's fight/sight range
(step 5) Drop the loaded Innos Eye
(select the item in the inventory and drop it to the ground with the jump key (default is [left ALT]))
(step 6) Insert the unloaded Innos Eye and take it
(enter "insert itmi_innoseye_discharged_mis" in the console and hit [Enter] - it's now in front of the player, grab it)
(step 7) Deactivate DevMode
(open stat screen (B), type "42", close stat screen (B) - be patient it takes a while)
Happy dragon-slaying!
Bullco (near the Ice Dragon) has 9000 gold on him after he beat me ...
... and he didn't take so much money from me.
--> A little money-multiply bug. Either you make sure he doesn't knock you out or you just take the money and you go get yourself some booze.
The Undead Dragon is missing!
Insert the end boss with "Insert DRAGON_UNDEAD" in the DevMode and talk to it. It doesn't make any difference for the main quest whether you kill the inserted Undead Dragon or not.
Mobs and animals won't fight back! They just stand there.
Talk to a NPC, this should solve the problem.
50 gold is subtracted when Onar pays me when playing as a mercenary
This is a minor bug in the US version of Gothic 2. Make sure you have the latest patch, if that doesn't solve it just ignore it. You don't need it anyway.
Mercenary: The farmers want to attack me when I challenge Bullco ...
... although I've followed all rules for a duel.
--> It's hard to tell if this should be noted as a bug. There are two ways to solve this:
(1) Just stand there and let Bullco come to you. When you start fighting Bullco the farmers will identify the duel as a fight and start cheering. When you pull out your sword first they will think you want to attack one of them.
(2) If they don't start cheering, run away and fight Bullco in the open. Most of the times this is easier anyway.
Militia: Mortis won't train me strength
Don't talk to Mortis when you're are guildless, otherwise Mortis won't learn you strength after you have joined the militia. Reload an older savegame or learn strength from somebody else.
Cassia in the Thieves' Guild attacks me, claiming I missed a deadline?!
Cassia gives you two days to make up your mind about joining the Thieves' Guild. In some cases she will still hold on to this deadline even though you have joined the guild already.
When she attacks, run away until she gives up the chase. Let her walk back to her lectern. When you now speak to her, she won't remember a thing about the deadline and you can talk to her like normal. Women...
The paladin ship won't leave the harbour, although everybody is on board!
Talk to the captain and enter the captain's cabin after that. This will start a cutscene.
I've learned the sneak-skill, but I keep loosing it.
There's no known solution for this problem, but we can give you a your lost learning points back.
(step 1) Activate DevMode:
(open the stat screen (B), type "marvin", close the stat screen (B))
(step 2) Open the console with [F2] and type "Edit abilities"
(step 3) In this window type "LP = ##" with ## the amount of LP you want.
(step 4) Deactivate DevMode
(open stat screen (B), type "42", close stat screen (B) - be patient it takes a while)
Now you can go to a trainer and learn sneak again.
When I attack a NPC his friends start to attack him and kill him.
This is a bug. If the NPC really needs to stay alive, reload the game. If that doesn't help, try to get the NPC away from his friends, attack him at night when his friends are sleeping for example.
It can also happen when your character is no longer identified as PC_HERO, see the post "Missing dialogs when using interactive objects" below.
Whenever a enemy/NPC is highlighted I automatically start strafing around it instead of moving normally.
Try switching the controls from WASD to the arrow configuration. You could also use the alternative configuration. In this configuration you need to explicitly lock on a target to start strafing.
I'm stuck in ...
... water, etc.
--> Press [Ctrl+Alt+F8]
Character stays/keeps on...
... frozen after a hit from an Iceball.
... wading after climbing out of the water.
... jumping.
--> Jump a few times, this will make your character respond like normal in many cases.
--> Otherwise press [Ctrl+Alt+F8]
Missing dialogs when using interactive objects (for example beds and chests)
(step 1) Activate DevMode
(open the stat screen (B), type "marvin", close the stat screen (B))
(step 2) Export the hero
(open the console with [F2], type "hero export bugfix", confirm with [ENTER])
(step 3) Import the hero again
(type "hero import bugfix" in the console)
(step 4) Deactivate DevMode
(close the console with [F2], open stat screen (B), type "42", close stat screen (B) - be patient it takes a while)
This is almost always a result of using cheats, disabling all codes/cheats (open stat screen (B), type "42", close stat screen (B)) is usually sufficient to solve the problem. What happens is that the hero-character isn't identified as the PC_HERO (mostly the result of possessing NPC's).
Some text is in still in German
Has to be patched.
The subtitles still include instructions for the actors
Has to be patched.
A few dialogs in the valley of mines are obviously wrong
Has to be patched.
I can't wear 2 rings ...
... after I've taken them off for the first time.
--> Unequip everything.
I'm stuck in a dialog
If the game doesn’t offer an "End dialog" option and you can't get out while life continues in the background you are in serious trouble.
Use [Shift+Esc] to exit the game. Nothing else! Save/load in the menu or killing the Gothic 2 with [Ctrl+Alt+Del] might result in a broken savegame.
The hotkeys for quickpotions aren't working?!
(1) Make sure you enable the use of hotkeys in the GOTHIC.INI with usePotionKeys=1
(2) "use health" or the "use mana" potion appears in the Options/Controls/More keys-tab. Turn the Gothic 1 controls OFF in the Options/Game menu, otherwise the "More keys"-tab will not show.
Can't select NPC's or object normally.
(1) Make sure you don't have two actions bound to one key (for example "turn right" and "action"). The result would be that you do both actions simultaneously. Set "Gothic 1 Controls" in the Options/Game menu to off. You will now see a "More keys"-tab in the Controls menu. Make sure none of the keys is used twice.
(2) Approach the NPC or object from a different angle.
(3) Swing a few times with your sword or jump around a little. This makes your character responds normal again.(See also "Character stays/keeps on..." above.)
C:zcwave Data::CacheIn() Could not decompress adpcm file SVM_12_SmallTalk20.wav
This seem to happen when a player has killed all the unimportant NPC's in the surroundings. Load a previous savegame where the NPC's aren't dead yet.

Misc.
What is the difference between the UK v1.31 and the US v1.32 of Gothic 2?
Some journal entries that were still in German are translated to English.
How to activate the internal frame counter?
Type (B), "frate", (B) (replace B with the kay assigned to the character screen). The frame rate should be displayed in the upper left corner.
Internal cache settings in the GOTHIC.INI
If you have a lot of RAM you can try to tweak the game a bit by assigning larger caches in the gothic.ini. This is only for advanced users. Better backup the GOTHIC.INI before you start.
When you have no problems with the framerate just leave it alone. When there are some weak spot you can try to change these values to increase performance.
Enter "Toggle frame" in the DevMode, this will give you the current fps reading. You can also enter "Ztoggle timedemo", this will give you an average of video run fps. If you want to do an analytical method test, leave the frame rate on in the DevMode while running through various scenario's, check your fps in areas with dense forest, in the city of Khorinis, while casting Rain of Fire against multiple orcs, etc. Now change texture cache in blocks until it suits you.
Viewing distance shortcuts
You can change the viewing distance on the fly with F1 - F4.
Changing distance shortcuts
You can change the viewing distance that is saved under F1 - F4 in the GOTHIC.INI
The default settings are:
SHORTKEY1FARPLANEDIST=0.8 or 0.800000012
SHORTKEY2FARPLANEDIST=1.2 or 1.20000005
SHORTKEY3FARPLANEDIST=2
SHORTKEY4FARPLANEDIST=3
The peculiar values for F1 and F2 are changed to 0.8 and 1.2 with NotR. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |
