ToEE Crafting Items

Hello.

I think I may have made a blunder. My Wizard is a specialist and so has a couple of Schools of Magic that she can't learn. So, when it comes to crafting items, does it mean I can't craft them if I can't memorise those spells. Is having the spell on a scroll not good enough?

Also some of the items say prerequisite NO_SPELL (or something) but I still can't make that item. Why is that> My chars are level 6 at the moment.

The only thinkgs I seem to be able to craft are a few scrolls and a cloak of reistance.

I've a very bad feeling about this......

I am fairly sure the no spell thing is a bug.

Not knowing the spell makes you unable to craft something with it.

Stamar the Mighty is correct. The no_spell thing is a bug, and if you don't know the spell you can't scribe the scroll. Some of them are just plain missing to boot (can't make scrolls of melf's acid arrow).

Once they fix the 'no_spell' thing item creation will be great. Except craft rod. Wait until level 9 and then ... three rods to choose from, and they're three of the suckiest rods in D&D. ANd one is druid only.

They also need to make masterwork weapons more accessible. I've found maybe three, and none of them was a longsword or greatsword or anything decent. I've never used craft arms and armor...

Still, it's nice to see the feature in the game and you can't argue with the physical stat boosters! Fighters love them.

The Blacksmith in Nulb had a Masterwork Longsword when I met him.

I took Craft Arms and Armor for my Bard. He can make a +1 Leather Armor and a Holy Longsword, with the option of adding some other damage types. Not really worth it.

I haven't gotten a copy yet, but I'd think a Holy Longsword might be *quite* useful ... unless you've found much better by then.

The Longsword my Bard got for his bride's dowry was very nice. So, he doesn't have to make himself one.

HOly weapons would be incredible later in the game, that's for sure. I can't break most damage reduction on any of the greater evils hanging about. Have to magic missile them to death.

The blacksmith has never had a masterwork weapon in my game. I'll check him again, but he might have come down with a slight case of dead.

As opposed to a really bad case of dead?

Oh yes. In D&D there's dead as in "Oops... bob rolled a one. Well, tie him to the back of Nessy the horse. The nearest temple is a 20 minute ride." and there's "The lord of evil rips the living soul from your body. The rest of the party sees a transluscent figure of Bob hoving before the visage of the lord of evil. 'Mortals.' the Lord of Evil hisses. With a twist of his divine power, the lord of evil shreds Bob's soul into a million pieces. 'What fools they be.'" Dead.

Fair enough.

(I'm guessing Bob wasn't a bard?)

Okay, I've played around with the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat. This thing seems seriously broken.

I was wrong about being able to craft the Holy Longsword +1, apparently, that's what my Bard is using, but it's called a Radiant Longsword when I look in my inventory. It looks like I'm supposed to be able to craft it up to +2 or add Frost or Shocking damage, but that doesn't work.
With magic armor it looks like I'm supposed to be able to add sneaking abilities or spell resistance, but that doesn't work either. I'll have to try it on a Masterwork piece of armor. From a Masterwork Longsword I was able to craft it into a Magic Longsword +1.
I was also able to add Frost damage to my Cleric's Holy Mace +1. Go figure.
Looks like the Great Cleaver is considered a Masterwork item. I can make it +1 or add Frost or Shock damage to it.

UPDATE:

After playing around with the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat more, I've realized that it isn't bugged. But I certainly wish that the manual had more detailing information about it.

1. You can upgrade masterwork items and some magic items.
2. With a masterwork item you can give it up to 3 upgrades. One has to be a +1 enchantment though. Then you can add +2 or Flaming, etc.
3. There are some magic items that, if they don't have 3 upgrades, then you can add another. For instance:
The Flaming Sword only has 2 upgrades; Flaming and a +1 enchantment. So, you can add any other upgrade that your character is capable of.

I hope this clears up some confusion about this feat.

Thanks Val, concise as usual. I'll have to try crafting now. Were you using the Co8 patch?

In D&D 3E you can enchant masterwork weapons. All magical weapons must be masterwork, and so all magical weapons can be further enchanted.

However, this would make the item database suicidally large in TOEE so I'm guessing they toned it down so that you can enchant masterwork weapons (easy on the database because they control how many are in the game and where) and perhaps a few other weapons (never thought to try the Insanity Axe of Pen and Paper DM would Disown you - the Great Cleaver).

They elected to limit weapon and armor enhancement bonuses to +3 instead of +10 likely for similar reasons. At level 9, if you had the money, there's nothing in tabletop D&D preventing you from creating and +3 Holy Flaming Defending Greatsword of Throwing, Distance and Returning. Though you couldn't make a +4 Weapon, or a +5.

Item creation is nice to see in TOEE... I hope more D&D 3e games that come out pick up on it... but it's got some serious limits on it.
